"Emergency sewer line repair done very quickly and without extensive front entry disruption….no digging up of the front grass or sidewalk, no removal of the porch and steps. You’ll need two sizes of pipe to plumb a bathroom. You’ll use a 1/2-inch pressure pipe for your supply lines that run from the fixture to the larger 3/4-inch supply lines that run through the house. For drain lines, you’ll need a 3-inch PVC pipe for your toilet, a 2-inch PVC pipe for stand-alone showers, and a 1 1/2-inch pipe for a shower/tub combo and the bathroom sink. Each fixture’s drain will run to the 3-inch main drain that runs through the house.

Water backing up in your bathtub could be a clog in the bathtub drain, but it could also signal a problem somewhere else in your plumbing system. Blocked vent pipes caused by leaves, bird nests, or other debris,  along with blocked sewer lines that are damaged or have tree roots could cause backups in various fixtures. 

For easy-to-access pipes, your plumber will shut off the main water line and replace the pipes without demolishing your property. Underground or difficult-to-access pipes require different approaches. There are two ways to replace underground cast iron pipes: trench and trenchless sewer line replacements. Trenchless replacements result in minimal damage to your yard and involve bursting pipes and replacing them with new ones via an access point.

If methods like hot water or a plunger don’t work on your clogged drain, you can snake your drain to dislodge the plug. This can be a messy process, taking some physical effort and additional time over the other drain-clearing options. You can purchase a drain snake at a hardware store and choose from handheld options or those attached to a drill. Just work slowly, and be ready to call a plumber if you’re unable to reach the clog from your drain or P-trap.

If you're dealing with a clogged sink drain, you may be able to avoid removing the drain by using a plunger to dislodge the clog. While we associate plungers with toilets, they can do the same job with your sink drain. Be gentle, though, as forceful movements can push clogs further into your plumbing system and make them more difficult to remove. Additionally, make sure you’re using a sink plunger—with a flat bottom—and not a toilet plunger—which has a smaller bottom protruding from the larger flat piece.
