"I tried for several years to repair our worn out deck. I didn't get far at all and only demolished a portion of the deck. We got a decent tax refund this year and decided to get it done by somebody that knows what they're doing. Using Angie's List, we got four competitive bids to do the work. Deckpeckers was the most reasonable. We're very glad we chose Deckpeckers. They completed the work in good time, and now we will enjoy the summer on the deck. Very good people to work with and we highly recommend them. Excellent value for the lowest cost. It's hard to beat that."

"Adam and his crew did an excellent job on building us a ramp from the front door to the driveway. About 25 feet long. They were all delayed a little because of the Michigan weather. Other than that, they were very professional and friendly. Great job."

"T&J finished our basement for us including building a full bath, drywall, installing crown molding, laying flooring etc. Tony (the owner) worked with us to come up with a plan based on our wants/needs. He made our dream come to life and it turned out better than we couldâ ve imagined. He never cut corners and took the time to do things right. He and his team were professional, friendly, and knowledgeable also. We highly recommend them for home improvement needs. We used them for a couple smaller projects with amazing results too."

Carpentry FAQs, answered by experts

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

Stick frames, metal frames, or prefabricated concrete frames are included in framing a house, along with creating the framework and space for windows, doors, and entryways. Other aspects of developing a home—like drywall, insulation, windows, doors, and more—are not included in the cost to frame a house.

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.
