Above Roofing started with a dedicated man who had a big idea. In 1995 Robert Freeman was a single parent trying to make ends meet while raising his young children. He had a passion to help others and used his knowledge and skills to start his own company doing home repair services. There were always homes needing roof work, and it quickly became his most popular service. It didn t take long for him to realize that many homeowners were being taken advantage of by other roofing contractors. Some were pressured by dishonest salesmen selling the homeowners things they didn t need or promising one thing but delivering another. Other homeowners hired guys who were nice but incompetent contractors, overlooking important aspects of the job just to keep the price down to win the bid. This often ended up causing costly leaks, mold and warranty issues. Another concern was with the people who were actually doing the work. While the sales person looked professional and seemed trustworthy, the guys that showed up to work on the roof looked like pirate crews with foul language and demeanors to match. These were guys he wouldn t want on his home or around his children! With each case Robert came across, he discovered a common denominator: a homeowner who was not given the information they needed to choose the right contractor. His heart went out to them. He knew he wanted to be a roofer that was different than the rest of the pack. He strived to go above the image of a normal roofing company - hence the name Above Roofing - by providing homeowners an honest, quality service at the right price, and it worked! Robert used a picture of his black lab to help represent the company because she was loyal, friendly and trustworthy- exactly what he wanted Above Roofing to be. It didn t take long for word to spread about this new company. Customer referrals became a huge part of growing the business, and it hasn t stopped since! According to Robert, Homeowners don t have to settle for poor workmanship or high pressure sales techniques. We believe homeowners can be confident in making an informed decision when hiring a contractor if they are equipped with the right information. Our job is to give them that information. "I own multiple properties and I have had experience with the worst imaginable roofer (literally all summer to do a 2-day job which only lasted 6 years) to so-so roofers, to quality roofing. Unfortunately, you really don’t know what you have with a roof until time goes by – maybe years. I have also learned that there must a million ways to cut corners in roofing and the homeowner simply doesn’t know what they don’t know – until later…..For me, I want the job done right, to last: Quality. I can’t imagine any other parameter that matters with a roof. But how do you know? I chose Sharp to do 2 roofing jobs: including my home. I chose them because of the transferable GAF Golden Pledge Warranty ( [*** Link removed ***] ). GAF carries the warranty – not the local roofer who might be gone tomorrow. With these 2 jobs, I only had Golden Pledge roofers give me a quote. The quotes were basically all the same. Of that group, Sharp was the most responsive, in every way. In fact, I would say that Derrick bent over backwards for me to deal with wind damage/insurance on one job. That’s a great story in itself. The crews did it right by every parameter including dealing with the problems that show up when the shingles are off. That will happen too, whether you find out or not. I know that roofing can be seen as a commodity where you go for as cheap a price as possible. I’ve learned it’s not and my review is to help the next person not make the same mistakes I made in the past when I was less informed. Do it right and save yourself all the hassle from a cheapo roofer doing a lousy job. One last thing, don’t let the friendly, smooth talking of the roof salesman sell you. What you want is demonstrable, tangible quality- that’s a lasting warranty from a company that’s going to be around. They have to prove it too. Either way, you’re going to pay. Quality costs less as time goes by."

"I've used this company off and on over the years, and they used to be really good, but lately I have been disappointed. I needed a new storm door and wanted a Larson, which they told me not to use because it was horrible to install. It's not, and the one they recommended instead is a pain in the neck because you have to take out the glass and put in the screen--and it was so poorly built that the guy (local mfg) had to come and install the center bar because it wouldn't hold the glass panel. The other job was on the garage. I needed to replace the outside edges of the garage door and wrap it with aluminum for the installation of the new garage door. Then they were supposed to install the weatherseal around the new door. They did the wrap ok, but then totally failed on the garage door weatherseal. They said it was too short, so they cut a bit off the side piece to fit the top, installed it in a way that it sagged across the top of the door opening, did not attach it closely enough to the garage door so that I could see daylight on the sides and got both snow and rain in the garage. I had the garage door company come and install a new one instead, since this was clearly a job beyond them. When I stopped in to their store a while later to talk about installing a new window, it was like walking into a frat boy party. Could not get a straight answer from anyone--they were more interested in joking around than really discussing the work with me. Gave me an estimate based on no information and didn't seem interested in coming to look at the job. I finally left. I don't like when contractors treat you like an idiot just because you are a woman (plenty of comments on women generally from the guy giving the quotes). I will not go back here."

"HWC - Home Works Corporation Wyoming, MI has been a total nightmare. We paid a $3000 deposit and paid them over $6000 to install a tub and tub surround in our bathroom. The caulk job(s) last only six seeks before it cracks and shrinks and it had to be redone several times and they will NOT cover it under the guarantee / warranty. We were charged $900.00 for the HWC installers to take the ceramic tile and plaster lat down to the bare studs, but they only partially and did it and didn’t do it all the way. They were supposed to use water resistant drywall from the tub to the ceiling and side to side, but used plywood instead and for only three feet from the tub up the wall and not the entire wall as they show in a training video they provided to us. They glued the plastic panels directly to the ceramic tile and we now have bubble lines across the entire back wall and side to side every twelve inches apart. We now have two different surfaces both plywood and ceramic tile behind the plastic paneling they installed. On the day the project was finished, three bikers showed to collect the remaining monies owed to HWC as the glue and caulk was not dried or had was set. HWC refuses to warranty and guarantee their work. Several attempts have been made to contact them and have them to come back out to see and correct the poor work performance, but HWC refuses to do so. The two owners have tried to intimate us and have threatened us via emails, that if we Google review HWC or report them to the “BBB” Better Business Bureau or take legal actions against them for the poor work that they have done. They fail to take responsibility and correct quality issues and the substandard performance of their installers. We have hired several good contractors over the past two years and with good and satisfying results. HWC has NOT been a good or reliable company to do business with and I encourage everyone to look elsewhere or prepare yourself for disappointment if you hire HWC. I advise you to avoid HWC like the plague. It is my recommendation that if you want good quality windows call 1-800-HANSONS. If you want a good quality roof call Above Roofing. If you are looking for other good quality contractors call Service Professor. Not HWC!"
