Metal roofs can rust, but steel is a material that holds up well to environmental factors, especially if it’s painted or galvanized. One of the main determining factors regarding rust is the environment the roof is in. Harsher environments with a lot of salt in the air will rust much more quickly than a steel or metal roof in a dry climate. Zinc-coated steel, called galvanized steel, is excellent at preventing rust from forming.

Most standing seam metal roofs last between 50 and 80 years. Certain high-end metals like copper or zinc can last up to 100 years if well-maintained. For the best durability, choose a low-gauge (thick) roof in a metal that works with your climate. Some are susceptible to thermal expansion and aren’t the best choice for all climates.

Metal roofs don’t inherently leak more than shingles, and when properly installed, they can actually offer greater protection against leaks. However, poor installation, improperly sealed fasteners, or thermal expansion issues can lead to leaks over time, so professional installation and regular maintenance are crucial.

Metal roofs are dangerous to walk on, even for professionals. Metal shake does offer some texture to help with grip, but metal itself is extremely slippery, especially at a medium to steep pitch, so call in a pro rather than getting up on the roof yourself. They’ll have the necessary safety equipment and experience to avoid injury.

Moss grows in dark areas of roofs, including in corners and gutters. If left alone, it can grow under roofing and cause permanent damage. Here’s how to remove moss from metal roofs: 

  • Soak the moss to soften it

  • Scrub it away with a soft-bristled brush, or pick it off with your hands (be sure to wear gloves)

  • Use a moss remover that’s compatible with metal roofing, following the manufacturer’s directions

  • Remove dead moss and rinse the roof thoroughly

  • Prevent future moss growth by trimming branches, cleaning gutters, and attaching zinc strips to moss-prone areas
