"Machtemes DBR completed a long punch list of handyman services on my home including soffit construction and gutter repair, heat coil installation for our roof line to address a persistent ice dam issue, porch roof assessment and repair, exterior door installation, finish work including baseboards and trim around windows and doors, and attic insulation. Jon the head contractor showed extensive and wide ra ging knowledge and expertise. His detail work was exceptional. He was able to perform tasks we requested but also was able to troubleshoot problems we didn't know how to solve, suggesting several options for us to consider. The work he did for us has lasted years showing no wear and tear. Would recommend him again."

"I had a fantastic experience working with this drafting firm. From the very first phone call, Kirsten?our drafting consultant? was clear, professional, and incredibly helpful. She explained the entire process in detail and made sure all of my questions were answered up front, which gave me immediate confidence in the team. This firm partnered with engineers and architects to get the best quote for me on a stamp for my plans after they did an exceptional job on drawing the prints that met all the requirements for permitting. Their coordination and attention to detail made the process very simple on my end. If you are looking for a highly capable drafting firm that knows how to get things done right, I highly recommend them!"

I highly recommend this company and the individuals I mentioned."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Completing structural engineering projects in Grand Rapids can significantly enhance your home’s value and appeal, especially if you address foundation issues, add living space, or improve energy efficiency. Local buyers often look for homes with documented upgrades and compliance with local codes. In Grand Rapids’ competitive market, professionally completed and permitted improvements can set your property apart and boost buyer confidence.

Helpful?

In Grand Rapids, consider the range of soil types, such as clay and glacial till, and be mindful of high water tables in certain neighborhoods. Check for any historic district or neighborhood association guidelines that may impact your plans. Seasonal weather, contractor schedules, and ensuring proper site drainage are also important to keep your structural engineering project on track.

Helpful?

Grand Rapids’ climate brings heavy snow, freeze-thaw cycles, and significant rainfall, all of which influence structural engineering decisions. Roofs must be designed for substantial snow loads, and foundations should be deep enough to prevent frost heaving. Choosing materials and drainage solutions that withstand temperature swings and moisture is essential for long-term durability in Grand Rapids.

Helpful?

Before starting a structural engineering project in Grand Rapids, arrange a soil analysis, review any historic district or HOA requirements, and confirm utility locations. Meet with local building officials early to understand permit timelines. Assemble a team familiar with Grand Rapids’ conditions and plan major work for spring through fall to minimize weather-related setbacks and keep your project moving smoothly.

Helpful?

When comparing quotes from structural engineering professionals in Grand Rapids, be wary of unclear scopes, unusually low bids, or professionals who don’t conduct on-site evaluations. If a quote overlooks local factors like snow loads or soil types, that’s a concern. Also, ensure they provide recent references from Grand Rapids projects and demonstrate knowledge of MI’s specific building standards and climate-related challenges.
