"My project was to repair drywall damage due to a serious roof leak. This included replacing damaged drywall, repairing a sagging ceiling that was water damaged, and spraying the "Popcorn" plaster on the ceiling. Also, the entire downstairs was subsequently painted. I was very satisfied with the drywall repair, I was very satisfied with the repair of the sagging ceiling, and the re-spraying of the popcorn plaster on the ceiling was excellent. The subsequent painting was professional. Two coats were applied everywhere, and the PPG brand of paint was of excellent quality. Finally, I thought the quote for the entire project was more than fair. I will bring back this company to paint my upstairs, and would feel free to recommend them to my family and friends. Thank you, John, for a job well done."

In most cases, no, you won’t need a permit to replace drywall. If you’re changing the floorplan of your home by adding or removing walls during the drywall project, then you might need a permit, but replacement or repairs usually doesn’t require a permit. Plaster is easy to apply in theory, but in reality, it can be a challenging material to work with, and it’s difficult to get the finished product to look clean, even, and smooth. Many DIYers end up calling in a professional afterward to touch up the area or even redo it entirely because of mistakes they made in the process. Hiring a plaster pro will cost more, but it’s usually the best option to achieve high-quality results.
