"We had a fantastic experience with Great Lakes Gardening. Drew, the owner, was great to work with — friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly cares a lot about the quality of his work. He took the time to understand what we wanted and made some really helpful suggestions along the way. They built a retaining wall for us and did a full refresh of our garden beds. The wall is solid and looks great — really well done. The plants they brought in were top quality and everything was placed with a lot of care and attention to detail. The whole crew was professional and respectful of our property. You can tell this is a business that takes pride in doing things the right way. We’ve already gotten a bunch of compliments from neighbors, and we’re thrilled with how it all turned out. Highly recommend!"

If you're looking for an architectural designer who brings more than textbook knowledge to the table, you're in the right place. With over 40 years in the construction industry—as a builder, designer, and business owner—I’ve developed a deep, hands-on understanding of how homes are truly built. Every project, challenge, and collaboration has shaped how I approach design today. That experience allows me to design residential projects that go beyond the blueprint, grounded in practical insight and a lifetime of lessons learned on the job.

Architects questions, answered by experts

Some homes, like those with flat roofs, may not have eaves at all. Some contemporary-style homes also lack eaves, although many may have abbreviated eaves to divert water and protect the walls and foundation. Homes without eaves often have specific types of gutters affixed directly to the edge of the roof to provide adequate drainage.

The biggest upside to hiring an architect is that they will ensure an efficient building process without errors. They will also ensure your home is free from structural issues and that everything is up to building code. Many permitting agencies require architects to draw construction plans and layouts before working, so hiring an architect will also ensure your project is legal. Additionally, architects help homeowners have a clear idea of their project details before the project starts. Hence, they help unify all parties on a shared vision for the project.

Greek Revival and Federal architecture are quite similar in that they focus on symmetry and a blend of utilitarianism and opulence, but they differ in a few key areas. First, Federal architecture tends to include a brick facade, whereas Greek Revival homes more often have stucco siding, much like you’d find in Mediterranean houses. Greek Revival homes also tend to be a bit more ornate, with columns as decor, and more decorative and formal porticos.

Universal design costs can be minimal when you add them during construction; however, adding universal design principles to existing homes can sometimes increase renovation costs. For example, a mid-grade bathroom remodel is estimated to cost around $30,000, while a standard universal design remodel can cost closer to $40,000. Adding accessible design components can include widening hallways ($500 to $2,000), curbless showers ($2,000 to $8,000), and widening doors ($400 to $800). Keep in mind that these increased costs can lead to higher resale values because universal homes may appeal to a wider variety of buyers.

The process involves initial consultation, concept development, detailed planning, regulatory approvals, and integration of contractor work for project execution.
