"The shingle roof on my gambrel garage came out very well and took about a week to do. There is still a ladder, planking and leftover material that he hasn't picked up yet but it has been raining and I can let him slide on that for a couple days. Sean did not do the work himself but the guys he sent were very courteous and worked diligently. The job was done at the price he quoted."

"Zackery is very thorough a conscious. I very been actively involved in all areas of the building/ mortgage etc. for decades, so I have seen a lot of work by seasoned professionals. Frankly, I wouldn't hire the majority of them. We had no idea what we had ahead of us since the house had just been painted. It was awful. There was several layers of wallpaper under the bad paint. He had to rip it all off mud 9pand sand sheetrock, patch holes, sand woodwork...and always left everything neater and cleaner that he found it. He is a good guy...he was very thoughtful about my allergies and disabilities. I can't wait to post pictures once every thing is done."

"Had to file a claim for new clothes dryer, and repairs on fridge. Foothills Star Appliance came to look at both. Eric was the repairman. He was friendly, answered all my questions, and very professional. I would highly recommend his company."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

You can take a few steps to save money on drywall installation, even when hiring a professional to do the bulk of the work for you. These ideas include the following:

  • Buy the drywall and other materials yourself to avoid product markup and delivery fees

  • Ask about discounts if you use the same company to tape, spackle, and paint

  • Hire drywall professionals in the winter when demand is the lowest

  • DIY as many parts of the project as possible, like replacing insulation and painting

Options include bricks, natural stone, and concrete blocks. Choose based on durability, aesthetics, and budget.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Plastering and skimming are two different techniques for finishing walls. Plastering involves applying a thick layer of a plaster mixture—typically containing gypsum, lime, cement, sand, and water—to create a new surface. This process often requires multiple coats and is used for repairing significant damage or creating decorative textures. Skimming, on the other hand, is a technique that involves applying a thin layer of drywall compound or joint compound over an existing surface to smooth it out, covering minor imperfections, small cracks, or uneven textures for a polished look. Plastering is generally more costly and labor-intensive than skimming. Although some people use the terms interchangeably, they refer to different processes and materials.

While not always necessary, you can glue a drywall ceiling in addition to using screws or nails. Drywall is typically secured to ceiling joists with fasteners, which is often sufficient. However, adding construction adhesive can offer benefits like preventing sagging, bridging gaps, and reducing air leaks for better energy efficiency. It may also be used for specific acoustic or insulation needs. On the other hand, many professionals advise against it because properly placed screws make the drywall structural, glue doesn't add strength, and it makes future repairs or replacements significantly more difficult. Ultimately, it's best to follow local building codes and project-specific requirements to decide if adhesive is right for your ceiling.
