"This is a great company! First, I made an appointment for an estimate to have the irrigation system installed. I decided they were the ones after 4 estimates, because Chris seemed to be the most knowledgeable of all the companies. Next installation went very smoothly, as well as the follow-up maintenance appointments. I am continually impressed with the professionalism! Would recommend them & would certainly select them again, so would my friends down the street who recommended them to me!"

"I was very impressed with the work that was done - my yard looks terrific - and the two gentlemen who did the work. They arrived on time ( a little early even!!) and did everything I asked very thoroughly. They cleaned up after themselves and left the lawn bags organized for pickup. I would definitely hire them again."

"Atlantic Lighting and Irrigation installed both an irrigation system and accent lighting on two trees. From Ian Chaput, the estimator, to the crew, everyone has been professional and timely. Damage was done to my system by an outside party excavating the lot next to me. Atlantic returned and made the necessary repairs. I have already recommended Atlantic Lighting and Irrigation and will continue to do so."

Lawn Irrigation questions, answered by experts

The best way to fix a lumpy yard depends on the cause. However, in many cases, you can address yard lumps by improving the health of your soil and turfgrass. Choose grass varieties that are best suited for your area and look for disease-resistant varieties. Fertilize and water your lawn as needed to keep it looking lush throughout the warmer months. Mow your grass at a height of 2 to 3 inches once or twice a week.

Germination varies with grass type and climate, generally taking 7 to 21 days. Full lawns develop over a few months.

Choosing between sod and seed depends on your budget, timeline, and maintenance preferences.

Sod:

  • Pros: Provides an instant, lush lawn and immediate curb appeal. It's more resistant to weeds and erosion, can be installed any time during the growing season, and offers a consistent appearance.

  • Cons: Has a higher upfront cost, typically $0.90 to $1.80 more per square foot than seed. It offers fewer grass varieties and must be installed immediately upon delivery.

Seed:

  • Pros: Less expensive upfront, making it a budget-friendly option. It offers a wider variety of grass types and is easier for a DIY installation.

  • Cons: Takes much longer to establish, potentially up to two years for a full lawn. It requires more maintenance, including regular weed control, and is more difficult to cultivate.

Ultimately, if you want a beautiful lawn quickly and have a larger budget, sod is an excellent choice. If you are patient, want to save money, and prefer a wider selection of grass types, seeding may be the better option.

Whether you’re putting down fresh seed or reseeding, there are a few things to keep in mind when seeding your lawn. Be sure to choose the correct seed for your climate, seed at the right time of year, and water two to three times a day for the first week. Generally, Dudley recommends seeding in spring and fall as it is usually cooler and rainier.

Having a luscious lawn won’t take a century to grow with hydroseeding—most hydroseed lawns sprout within 7 to 14 days. Once the new grass is about 4 inches tall, which is about six weeks after the installation, it’s ready to mow. After the initial mow, keep foot traffic at a minimum for another four weeks to solidify the rooting system.
