You should fertilize your lawn after it has grown at least two inches or after your second mow (usually in March or April). Applying fertilizer too early can feed your weeds and cause them to grow stronger, too. You should water your lawn two to three days before you apply fertilizer to ensure the soil absorbs it.

If your grass is stressed from being over-trimmed, try watering it heavily and then allowing it to recover for at least two weeks before mowing again. If you notice brown patches where the grass has died off because it’s too short, you should remove the dead grass and overseed the area. Leaving dead patches can invite weeds and other problems, so if you want a totally green lawn, getting rid of dead patches should include removing the dead sections before reseeding the area.

Water daily, avoid heavy foot traffic, and mow when the grass reaches 3-4 inches.

You don't want to over-fertilize your lawn because it can burn the grass and even kill it. Healthy soil usually requires two fertilization applications a year during the height of the growing season. This fertilization schedule typically starts at the start of fall and the end of spring, depending on the grass type and plants.

The first step is killing any current nutgrass plants, either through application of herbicides or sugar, by digging up the plants and rhizomes, or by using soil solarization. To discourage new nutgrass plants from forming, ensure proper landscape drainage and bring shade into areas of the lawn that are consistently damp.
