"AdvantaClean installed a radon mitigation system at my house. Within two years, the piping they put in on the outside of the house to vent the gas collapsed. Upon further inspection, the ~30ft., ~50lb. pipe had been affixed upright by two plastic ties screwed to the siding, and the weight of the pipe had caused the screws to tear through the thin plastic on both ties. Similar systems I've looked at in the neighborhood use lighter, metal, gutter-like pipes, and metal ties (stronger ties for lighter pipes!). When contacted, Dave (the owner) tried to get me to pay $300 to fix it, claiming that he otherwise "couldn't help me" because I couldn't reasonably expect their work to last for almost two years. He also said any kind of warranty was void because "wind damage" wasn't covered. The winds in Frederick topped out at 8mph the day it fell, but I guess he's right. It honestly WOULD be unreasonable to expect this quality of work to hold up to normal weather events (normal storms and winds in a fairly mild weather part of the country) and wear for two whole years! I'm frankly surprised it didn't fall earlier. Oh, and it took me calling AdvantaClean three times to get ahold of him (thought I was promised a call back each time!), but that's way less egregious than the whole "doing sub-par work and trying to get me to pay for it when it failed" thing."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

A DIY kit can lessen the sting that comes with paying for a professional assessment, but these comprehensive tests are true lifesavers. Inspectors are more likely to catch all of the pollutants and hazards in your air. Plus, you’ll still need a professional to verify and act on your DIY test results.

Some kits don’t include tests for certain air pollutants or only detect their presence, but not their levels (i.e., mold spores). If you’re willing to shell out money for a DIY kit, it’s usually better to stretch your budget slightly higher for a more detailed assessment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to remediate radon yourself. While a radon reduction professional can make the biggest impact in your home, you can make efforts to improve radon levels on your own by sealing cracks, increasing ventilation, and testing for radon regularly.

A professional indoor air quality inspection takes anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the size of your home and the number of necessary samples. After the test, the specialist will discuss the findings, but you won’t get a full written report for 2 to 10 days, though you can ask your pro to expedite the process, if needed.

Yes, radon testing is absolutely necessary if you suspect the presence of this hazardous gas, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends testing for all homes in the country. Radon is a pervasive natural gas that can leak through your home’s foundation and seep into the living areas. Unfortunately, the gas is highly carcinogenic and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon testing is crucial for keeping you and your family safe from harm, so hire a radon mitigation specialist to test your home if you suspect its presence in your home.

Avoid opening windows and keep doors closed during testing to obtain accurate readings.
