"Lawrence came out on a Saturday to fix the lock on our iron gate before we left for vacation. As we suspected, the lock was shot but Lawrence was able to replace it with newer version of the exact same Yale lock! Lawrence was extremely knowledgable regarding DC codes and explained that if we rented our house, we could call back and have the lock portion replaced with a handle! Great job! Would absolutely call them again!"

"This is an outstanding company. Charles replaced my staircase in my home and it is beautiful. They tore it completely out and installed a brand new set of stairs and beautiful railings. It changed the appearance of my home. Charles has great communication and explained everything and helped and encouraged me do my research. He took time and personalized the work. The crew was respectful being professional while being personable. They were very respectful of my home while the doing the work and clean also was wonderful. Charles impressed me with his follow up - making sure all my expectations were met. My neighbors saw the commotion at my house and came to investigate and they were so impressed that they took his card and are planning on Charles doing work for them. Price was spot on and worth every penny. This was an exceptional experience and I am having Charles come back and re-do my wood flooring. I cannot say enough good things. I have worked with contractors in the past and my experience with Iron Solutions was a breath of fresh of air. I strongly recommend Charles as this is a true professional."

"The handyman was on time, efficient, and didn't have any trouble with the weird under-sink spaces or tight tolerance on the faucet placement. Did a great job, everything works fine, and the faucet looks superb! He even helped assess if the rusty drain basket was the sink or the drain finish and recommended we not have it replaced until the rusty sink iron was cleaned up."

"Great service and a beautiful fence! Lotsa Fence clearly demonstrated their knowledge of how to build a quality fence that lasts for years (25+ year pressure-treated wood). I'm so happy with how the fence turned out, especially with our sloped and asymmetric property lines."

Wrought Iron questions, answered by experts

A horizontal fence is typically more expensive to build than a vertical fence, often costing between 10% and 20% more. The higher cost is due to the need for a higher grade of lumber and more posts to prevent the boards from sagging, which increases both material and labor expenses. Despite the higher price, horizontal fences tend to be more durable and offer a more distinct, modern look compared to the more common vertical picket style. However, they may not be the best option for privacy, as there can be slight gaps between the horizontal rails.

A wrought iron fence is generally considered a worthwhile investment, provided the cost fits your budget and its characteristics meet your needs. While it is an expensive material, its exceptional durability and longevity mean you can save money over time by not having to replace it.

Key benefits include:

  • Durability and Security: Wrought iron is strong and provides excellent security for your home.

  • Longevity: With proper maintenance, it can last a lifetime or longer.

  • Aesthetics: It offers a classy, timeless, and elegant look that can boost your home's curb appeal and property value, especially when complementing brick or stone architecture.

However, it's important to note that wrought iron fencing does not offer much privacy. If professionally installed and maintained, it is a sound long-term investment.

Metal fencing is one of the most expensive options and is certainly more expensive than vinyl and oftentimes, wood. Specialized electric fences and, in certain cases, concrete can be more expensive than metal, but wrought iron is one of the most expensive fencing options, which is why you see it most often on expensive estates and in affluent zip codes.

The average cost to install a fence is between $1,800 and $4,500. However, the price can vary significantly based on several factors. For a small DIY project, costs could be as low as $450, while fencing a large property like a 5-acre yard can exceed $43,000. Key factors that influence the total cost include the fence's size and height, the material used, the complexity of the design, site preparation needs, and any additional features like gates. The cost of raw materials, manufacturing, and custom fabrication can also impact the final price.

You’ll need to bury the garden fence about 1 foot underground. It’s tempting to save on materials by burying the fence just a couple of inches, but if you do so, determined pests will still be able to dig under the fence and access your plants. Burying your garden fence deep into the soil is an important step that allows you to attach a wire barrier to the fencing.

Burrowing animals (like voles, moles, rabbits, and gophers) can’t dig or chew through this wiring, meaning that you’ll be keeping your prized petunias or your robust veggie garden from being eaten.
