"Very pleased. First, Joseph gave good advice regarding the repairs - an approach I hadn't thought of. Work was done to my satisfaction. He was on time, cleaned up as he went and was very professional and pleasant to work with. Have hired for another job."

"I hired Henry Forrest and his team to tuckpoint and waterproof part of the stone foundation of my 157-year-old house in Old Ellicott City. The work looks great and Henry and his team were friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. They did exactly what was on the contract and it took the time and cost that I was quoted. My wife and I are very happy with the work and we will look to them again when the time comes to touch up the other walls of the foundation. Would recommend."

"Danny did a phenomenal job repairing the ceiling drywall in both my kitchen and dining room & then painting both ceilings. He was very careful when moving furniture & making sure all cabinets & wall hangings were all completely covered. Was courteous & personable from start to finish; his reasonable & fairly priced estimate did not break the bank! I will definitely call him for any other jobs in the future."

"Great. Oscar and Fernandez were prompt, considerate and very competent. The wall and the cabinet surrounding the water shut off match perfectly with the remaining wall. They covered all furnishing, designed appropriate shelving and cleaned up all remaining depre."

Small jobs welcome

"Had a great experience with Rosales contractors. Hired them to paint a bedroom and complete several repairs in our house. They were very professional and easy to work with. Had a minor issue with one item but came back right away to correct it. Really appreciate the great customer service and workmanship."

"There were a total of 5 holes cut in our living room wall to do the tv mount & hide wires (done by a different service provider). Pete repaired the 5 holes, and repainted the wall. It looks great. You'd never know there were holes there. He was responsive via phone/email beforehand and came on a Saturday to get it done (which worked great for us, because we didn't have to go too long with holes in our living room wall.)"

"He was very nice and polite. He was prepared and had thought through our problems with the pictures sent. I think our gate problems have been resolved. I have asked to come back to fix a receptacle and replace place batteries in one of my cameras."

"It went perfectly. The wallboard was expertly repaired in order to affix new wallpaper, and it looks great. The window had to be special ordered because it's not a size currently mass produced. .Nestor, the handyman, kept us aware of the delivery schedule and installed the window on the first date we had available. The new window looks and works great. I've already recommended Chapin Handyman to a neighbor a couple of days ago."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Costs range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on size, material, and design complexity.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

Depending on who you hire to build a retaining wall, the average cost, including demolition and reconstruction, for a 50-foot wall that's 4 feet in height is between $7,000 and $24,000.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.
