"I was referred to Kolb Electric by my home warranty service.  There were two issues, both in the bathroom:  1.  The light fixture did not work.  I had changed the bulb but still no light.  Could not determine the issue on my own so I contacted an electrician.  2.  One of the two plugs on the outlet did not work.  The latter issue was relatively easy to resolve.  The repair person happened to have a GFI receptacle and was able to replace.  He noted that the cost was normally $30 + tax for the part but he did not charge me.  The reset had broken on the other one.   With the former issue, the technician was taking a very long time (more than 30 mins) to diagnose the problem.  His conclusion was that i needed a new fixture entirely.  The one I had was a T12 ballast fixture and he recommended a T8 ballast fixture.  I asked him to explain the rationale as well as the difference between the two.  He didn't provide a very thorough or  clear explanation, except to repeatedly say that I needed a new fixture.  In reality, what he was recommending was a new striplight--not a new fixture.  [Note:  I purchased a new T8 light strip from Amazon for a whopping $16.45.]  When I asked if he was able to make this repair, he noted that he had to contact my home warranty service to get approval.  I could not recall immediately if my home warranty covered parts, etc.  I looked through my files for a copy of the policy while he spoke with the home warranty service via phone.  He shared with me that he'd now been at my home for more than an hour, and there would be charges for subsequent time.  [Note:  He was on the phone with the home warranty company from 8:49 am - 9:20 am.]  I asked him how he'd calculated that, since it had been less than an hour, and he said that he included the time it took him to find parking.  Even now, nearly two years later as I write this, I still can't believe he actually said that.  If every repair or service person charged their customers in DC for time they search for parking, no one would ever be able to afford a repair service.  This is a major metropolitan city and you're arriving during the AM rush hour (arrived at 7:40 am).  As he spoke (allegedly) to the warranty company, presumably his dispatcher/supervisor and me, he kept changing the cost to stay--from $246 to $305 to $185 (for the fixture alone) to $270.  At this point, I decided to wrap up our interaction, and told him I'd be in touch if I needed him (which I never would).  I gave him a check for $75--the cost per the warranty company for the visit.  In the end, I never called him or Kolb back.  It took 2 more electricians to diagnose the problem (see my POSITIVE review of A Action Home Services).  In the end, it wasn't the fixture at all.  A neutral connection had to be repaired.  Once that was fixed, and a new bulb installed, ta-da:  light!  I'm being generous with my rating mostly because he did fix the plug.

Small jobs welcome

"The salesperson that came to look at the job/s was extremely professional. He helped me fix and overhead light and changed all of my kitchen recessed lights during our meeting. The price he quoted was $700.00 less then Mr. Electric. The work was completed the next day. They electricians were great. The only reason I didn't give an "A" on quality is because when they replaced a GFI with a new bright white switch, they left the old dingy ivory switch plate on it. It is a totally eye sore. i would have paid the extra for a new white switch plate. I didn't notice it until they left. I would have certainly said something. Great job over all. I would use again!"

"Communication & Scheduling with Dynamo Electric was easy, emails were responded to quickly.  Electrician arrived on time and was very professional, knowledgable, and did a great job explaining the problem and what needed to be done to fix it.  He did a great job fixing the master bedroom fans and the light switch.  Would definitely hire Dynamo Electric again.

"I can’t say enough great things about Chad and his expertise! We’ve lived in our home for 3 years now and only because of King’s Electric do we FINALLY have a light in our dining room ?? Chad scheduled an estimate quickly within a week from the first time I inquired about him, then he was able to perform a whole house safety check of our electrical panel, smoke detectors, etc., before installing our new light fixture all in a matter of a few hours. He was a pleasure to have in our home, very personable and easy to chat with. Zero pressure to schedule any extra or recommended services until we were ready. And so clean and efficient! So impressed with the customer service and quality of work!"

"I live on a residential street in Baltimore County that doesn't have street lights to see at night. I purchased the three motion detector lights. I called Mr. Davis to schedule an appointment to install the lighting. Mr. Davis arrived in a timely manner brought the necessary material and equipment to install the lighting on the front entrance, side entrance, and back entrance. Everything was done accordingly, and have had no problems. I'm completely satisfied the job performance.

Chandelier Installation questions, answered by experts

Halogen and LED light bulbs are the most common bulbs for recessed lighting, but you don’t need any special type. LEDs are growing in popularity because they’re the most energy-efficient, which can help you save money in the long run and minimize how often you need to change your light bulbs.

The process of installing a pendant light is actually quite simple. If you’ve ever learned how to install a light fixture of any kind, you’ll already know what to do. Pendant light installation consists of connecting wires from your home circuit to the fixture, securely installing it to a mounting bracket in the ceiling, and assembling the rest of the light—simple as that. If you’re not sure about installing your own lights, you can always get in touch with a local light installation company to lend a hand.

First of all, don’t shop for bargain lights—often, you’ll end up with a faulty or broken strand, full of dead bulbs or less-than-luminous brightness. Choose quality lights that will last you many years—LED lights have been known to last as long as 100,000 hours. Second, plan ahead and purchase lights for next year’s Christmas during this year’s post-holiday sales. Finally, have a vision and a plan—if you know the measurements of your home, including any windows, doors, and outside bushes you wish to light up, you should be able to only purchase the necessary lights and not more than you need.

Common fixtures include LED panels, recessed lighting, and heavy-duty outlets. Choose based on energy efficiency and usage.

For every foot of ceiling height, your chandelier should have two to three inches of height. To calculate the width of the ideal chandelier, determine the width and length of the room.

Add these two numbers together and that is the number of inches wide your chandelier should be. For example, if your room is 15 feet wide and 15 feet tall, you will need a chandelier that is 30 inches wide.
