"Atlas Home Energy Solution performed an energy audit for my home, followed by various insulation and weather-proofing tasks. Three other companies gave me estimates much higher for a work smaller in scope. Atlas estimate was lower for a more extensive work, and when combined with the rebate from BGE, turned out to be a highly reasonable deal. The employees were pleasant, courteous, and performed every task to perfection. I highly recommend them for any home energy issues"

"There was a problem initially with the radiant barrier installation - the first crew of two were installing 30" wide rolls lengthwise along the roof end to end  instead of from ridge to eave as the manufacturer recommends and made a couple of other minor mistakes which were easily corrected. After talking to the manufacturer, the sales rep offered to take out what had been installed and re-install according to spec or continue as already done with sealing of all seams and a discount on the job. Done this way, the foil would not have the insulation properties per spec but would provide the radiant barrier I desired. I chose the letter option and the barrier work was continued by another crew on the 2nd day. On the 3rd day the crew finished up with the barrier then blew in the installation.

With the exception of the initial problem, the work was done neatly and professionally by courteous workmen who cleaned up completely after the job was done.

"Very professional, on time, great communication, thorough examination of my home. This is an absolute requirement for any home owner. The equipment they provide (LED lights, low flow equipment, pipe insulation) is well worth the fee to have the audit conducted."

"My home was very drafty.  During the consultation I was told that by insulating my heating and AC bills could be reduced by 40%.  This past winter was not cold enough to compare, but in the summer my air ran constantly and my bills were not reduced even 20%.  My interior walls have nail pops everywhere.

Project went very well! I couldn't be more pleased with Timothy's Home Improvement! Two years ago, I contracted another contractor, Tim Powell, to build a shed under my deck. Mr. Powell did a good job but his design did not prevent water from leaking into the shed like he said it would. Many times there would be around 2 inches of standing water on the shed cement floor after a heavy rainfall not to mention all the walls were soaked. Unfortunately, Mr. Powell did NOT return my phone calls requesting he fix all the leaking. After about 6-7 months of chasing after Mr. Powell, I gave up. Fast forwarding to today, the leaking was creating wood rot and serious mold issues. I knew that if I didn't address this issue soon, that the problem would only get worse and cost more to repair. I found Timothy's Home Improvement on Angie's List, and his company had a solid "A" rating. I contacted Timothy Howard, and he met with me within a day or two. We discussed the project and what it would take to repair everything. Timothy's estimate wasn't the lowest and wasn't the highest but in the middle. I decided on Timothy's Home Improvement because of their vast experience waterproofing sheds that are built under decks as part of the deck. During the project, we ran into an unforeseen issue. We would not be able to reuse the composite decking as we had planned. Long story but the original builder used ultra crappy decking material; the deck boards were hollow! And because we couldn't access the screws, we had to tear the boards off which ripped the screws out which left gaping holes where the screws had been. Additionally, the deck boards were too brittle and cracked at the slightest twist. This setback just blew through my $10k budget. Timothy knew I was on a tight budget and did the best he could to keep all the additional costs down to bare-bones like 1) not charging any fee on the materials, 2) passing his contractor prices for material onto you (The contractor price that Timothy pays for materiel is what you'll pay, which is much cheaper than what you'll pay if you go out and buy it yourself including the military discount at Home Depot and Lowe's), and 3) reducing his additional labor cost to install my new deck by $500! Timothy found other ways to reduce costs here and there thus saving me another $550! All said and done, the project came out to around $14k and includes a 3-yrs warranty. The project was finished about 2 weeks ago and took 7 working days. The new deck looks great, and the shed has withstood 3 heavy rain showers superbly?not one single drop of water leaking into the shed!

"I will be paying for the tarp installation, but ultimately, my Condo Association agreed to provide their repair person, at their cost, when it was proved that it was the fault of the roofers. I was very pleased with the professionalism and prompt response of Kargman. I would certainly use them again and would highly recommend them to my friends."

AMS got my permit for me and was able to closely match my vinyl siding and roof shingles. It took a few days but one was because of rain. They also replaced my front gutters to fit in with my new portico.

The new portico blends well with the house and AMS took care that the new materials they used went well with the old materials. They cleaned up every day and after the job was finished. My old portico slanted down and dripped rain and snow on my front steps. The new one is a Gable roof and makes a big difference on snow days.

AMS handled al the Montgomery County inspections and the final approval.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

You’ve likely heard the saying “heat rises”—well, it’s true! This is why it is critical to properly insulate your attic and protect yourself from chilly winter nights. During summer, your attic insulation will also protect against excessive heat gain radiating through the ceiling into the rest of your home below.

A plastic vapor barrier should completely cover your basement to prevent water from penetrating through the walls. This typically goes before installing insulation to prevent moisture from building up and becoming trapped on the inside of your insulation, where it can collect and lead to mold damage. Installing insulation after the vapor barrier allows for any moisture to exit the walls for better ventilation.

Insulation prevents heat transfer, which keeps your home cool in summer and warm in winter. Regulating the temperature in your home is not only more comfortable for you, but will lower your heating and cooling bills—it’s a win-win. Make sure to determine the correct amount of insulation to ensure it is enough for your home and climate.

It is normal for the attic to be hotter than the rest of the house in the summer, but only by about 10 or 20 degrees. Attics that aren’t properly insulated or ventilated can reach temperatures of 130 degrees or more which can cause damage to the home’s structure, including the roof, wood framing, and HVAC system.

The primary downside of radiant barriers is their limited effectiveness in cold climates. They are designed to reflect radiant heat, making them less beneficial in cooler conditions where heat retention is more important.

Radiant barriers require proper installation to maximize effectiveness. Incorrect placement can lead to minimal benefits. They also do not provide insulation, meaning they should be used in conjunction with traditional insulation for optimal energy efficiency.
