"It was a tie between Hometown and another contractor, and I chose the other one because that business was closer to my home. However, I was VERY impressed with Hometown's clear and prompt communication and responsiveness to my request for a bid, as well as their follow through as I made my decision. It was after I'd committed to the other one that learned more about the professional credentials of the Hometown arborist. I will definitely consider Hometown as a front runner the next time."

Customers say: True professional

"The Dagenhart did a very nice job at my house. They were very personable and professional. The trees I needed trimed were extremely tall and they had no trouble completing the job. They were able to give me the estimate the same day they came to look and that was exactly what they charged. I listened to their suggestions and appreciated their knowledge. I’m very happy with the outcome. when they were done they cleaned up all the limbs and branches that they took down. I highly recommend them for their 40 years of experience and professional workmanship."

"Fernando Reyes gave a highly competitive bid. Since we were first time with a difficult hundred foot tee on steep, difficult terrain, we examined the website, found they had heavy lift capabilities and gave the job . A broken part caused a two day delay and they were on site 10 AM with a large hard working crew and to our amazement completed the job in 3 hours, raking and seeding their equipment tracks . We could not ask more and will definitely make Fernando Reyes and White OakTree Expert our “go to company” for this rural , complex forest environment surrounding our laboratory."

"I'm super happy! My only regret is that I didn't take a before picture of my lawn. I had been trying to fertilize and overseed on my own with products from Home Depot but my lawn just wasn't responding. I've been using Blades of Green for about a year now, and the results have been great. They've been a great company to deal with, and I highly recommend them."

"Will and his team were wonderful! We had some old dead trees that needed to be removed as well as a large Sycamore that needed to be cut back and shaped. Will is so nice, knowledgeable and personable. VERY reasonable price as well! We have many trees and will definitely hire Will again!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Deciduous shade trees (the type of trees whose leaves fall off in autumn) need to be pruned in late winter—between February and March. That’s because it’s easier to find and remove sick or dead branches when no leaves are present. And wounds close and heal faster in colder temperatures so pruning them at this time also makes them less prone to infection.

For Bradford pears, damage from storms is common, and if the trunk splits, it can pose a danger to people and surrounding structures. The best thing to do in that instance is to have the tree removed. If there’s only minor damage to the branches, pruning away the damaged parts is the first order of business. You may also want to consult a professional arborist to make sure the tree is healthy.

You can use a chainsaw, but it won’t remove the entire stump or root ball and is not a recommended method. It takes quite a bit of physical work to achieve and will likely dull or ruin your chainsaw. Instead, consider using salt, herbicide, light deprivation, boiling water, stump grinding, or burning to kill a tree stump. These methods allow you to kill a stump using minimal machinery and physical exertion.

Large, established tree branches won’t grow roots, but if you find a young tree branch that’s less than about a year old, you’ve got a shot. Put it in water or soil as soon as possible for best results. You’ll know the branch is viable if it’s about the thickness of a pencil and has some leaves or needles.

Dutch elm disease can’t harm humans. In fact, according to Cal Fire, bark beetles aren’t even typically dangerous to trees unless that tree is already weakened. The problem comes when Dutch elm disease kills a tree. That tree is more at risk of falling and catching fire, which can pose a serious threat.
