"We have had NovaExteriors replace all our gutters, windows, sliding doors and front door over the last several years from the contractor grade products that the town house was built with. We have been very pleased with everything. They installed our steel front door about 10 years ago and we started to have issues with the deadbolt not aligning with the door jam and the rubber sweep wearing out over time. "Great work! The order process for the door was easy and the doors arrived early and to specifications. Scheduling for the install was clear. The team -- Mike and John -- were on time, professional, took care to clean the workspace, did a quality install -- including the repair of sub flooring damage as the old doors were letting rain water inside. "Tomas M from JW did a great job. Needed replacement for part of the frame of front door. He did a fantastic job in matching the replacement panel to the rest of door. He also painted the entire frame and replaced some additional wood that we damaged at top of frame and caulked it all. Also had a basement door frame sanded and repainted. Yes, if you’re replacing a door slab, it must be the exact size of your existing door. If your new door is too small, you’ll need to purchase a new door to fit or hire a handyperson to make your frame smaller. Or if it's too big, you’ll need to return it or shave it down to fit.

The best place to install a dog door is on an exterior door that leads to a fenced-in area of your rear yard. This position will let your dog go in and out as they need and still keep them safe in your yard when they’re outside. You should plan on installing the bottom of the doggie door a minimum of 3 inches above the bottom of your exterior door to maintain the structural integrity of the door, and never cut out a hole within 3 inches of exterior door glass.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Many door manufacturers produce doors fit-to-size using individualized dimensions. Another option, if the door opening is smaller than standard, is to have the door frame opening cut larger to accommodate a standard-sized door.

Standard door sizes aren’t one-size-fits-all, but there are common go-to dimensions. For exterior doors—like your front door—36 inches wide by 80 inches tall is typical, though you’ll see 30- or 32-inch widths too, especially in older homes. Interior doors vary more. Bedrooms and bathrooms often use 30- to 32-inch widths, and closet doors can be anything from slim singles to wide bi-folds. Height is usually 80 inches across the board; however, always measure your actual opening. “Standard” only works if it matches what’s already in place.
