"I wanted to get a security system but had no clue where to start. I went ahead and used Angie's List as a reference. We’re happy with our experience dealing with Alarm Protection Group. Bought their starter package that covers our doors, windows, 3 motion detectors, and a sleek control panel."

"Walter and Glen at Protect Your Home Group with ADT are the best people to talk to in terms of security alarm. Being a locksmith myself I know how important it is to deal with the right people. I referred a lot of customers to them and so far they are happy with their service. I myself got one for my house. Thank you for a consistent service and great deal."

"Front Door locks broken on my home. Had to take off work, no way to secure my home. Home Advisor put me touch with Colonial Lock Service, Inc. the gentleman on the phone tried to help trouble shoot the problem when that failed a locksmith was dispatched. The locksmith called and said I will be there in an hour. This young man showed up on time and said don't worry I hear to make it better. He had such great friendly personality and did a great job. He replaced both of my locks and said "Sir your new locks turn like butter now". Well that made my laugh but he was so right, my locks never worked so good. It appears when the door was replace 15 years ago the locks never really lined up right. The replacement locks were are not your local hardware style, much better quality. I was quoted a price which having never used a locksmith before I thought was high, however the quick response, great service, better then average hardware and most of all the locksmith had a great friendly attitude. The price was right. This young man shook my hand and thanked me. Right when I thought there was no more good customer service in this world, WOW!"

"The garage door sensor isn't working right and they are sending a different model. We've needed to call them several times to get this sorted, but they are good on the phone.
They nickel and dime on the equipment, wanting to charge us 7$ to ship a keyring and it took 7 days to arrive. And then when a sensor was failing they wanted to send a new one but with same slow shipping which would have left our house insecure for a week. I had to moan about it til they agreed to send it faster, but I feel like, "duh, I'm paying to have security when I want it, not just at times when you can get your shipping and your defective gear working.'
So sure I like them, but it leaves a bad taste that I had to suggest to them they should support their products and service. I'd have preferred it if they just had a policy of providing high evel service right out of the gate.
The gear is GE sensors and the phone app seems like a licensed deal, works well. Now we know we can probably do it all cheaper by just buying sensors and contracting for monitoring service seperately, but this is our first experience with home security and I appreciate the level of service. WHen our contract is up, I'll shop around for monitoring but this was a good way to get into it.
Costing us about 49/mo. and we like having the piece of mind.

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on lock type, service complexity, labor, emergency availability, and whether security system integration is needed.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

Smart deadbolts are a worthwhile investment for homeowners seeking more convenience, flexibility, and advanced features than a traditional deadbolt can provide. While a strong conventional deadbolt offers sufficient security for most, smart deadbolts provide significant upgrades.

Key benefits include keyless entry via smartphone, keypads, or biometric sensors, and the ability to lock or unlock your door remotely. You can also manage access for guests by creating temporary codes, eliminating the need for physical keys and the risk of them being lost or duplicated. Many models integrate with smart home systems and offer features like automatic locking, entry-exit monitoring, and tamper alerts with encryption for enhanced security.

However, there are downsides to consider. Smart deadbolts are more expensive than their traditional counterparts and rely on batteries and wireless networks to function. This dependency introduces potential vulnerabilities, such as hacking by skilled intruders and privacy concerns. Installation can also be more complex. Despite these drawbacks, the added layer of convenience and protection makes them a compelling option for many.

Most jobs take 30 minutes to 2 hours, but high-security systems or multiple lock installations may require additional time.

Over time, latch components may wear out or get grimy, leading to this problem. First, check for dirt, dust, or debris in the latch mechanism to ensure smooth operation. Use an aerosol duster and lubricant to clean and loosen. You may also need to tighten the screws in the component, adjust the strike plate, or replace the lock. If none of these steps resolve the problem, consult a professional locksmith.
