"I am an engineer and I know everything about air conditioning. I could do the installation myself, but I do not have a permit to work with some freons, and I do not have all the required tools, so I had to call a HVAC company to replace an old 2.5 ton heat pump system (that used R-22) with a new 2.5 ton heat pump system (that uses R-410A). The freon compressor in the old system had a short circuit to the ground, but because of the R-22 phaseout I had to replace the entire system rather than just the dead compressor. I contacted 13 companies that work in my area. 9 of them told me that they were very busy and could not take new orders. 4 companies sent salesmen who gave me price estimates. Three of the four price estimates included items that were not necessary, which is what pushed the prices up. When two people (Debbie Thomas and Ron Thomas) from Maryland Heating and Cooling showed up, they started to discuss with each other (in my presence) which items I do not need to replace; this would save me money. In the end they decided that none of the existing duct work needs to be modified and that the old copper freon lines are in good shape and can be re-used, all the wiring and fuses need not be replaced, and the old thermostat is perfectly fine. In the end they came up with the lowest price; significantly lower than the three other offers. Furthermore, they were able to do the installation on the second day after I signed the contract and paid the deposit. I was watching them while they did the work, and I am confident that they did everything right, because I understand exactly what they were doing and why. In other words, they did not cut any corners. And they were completely honest with their price estimate. I was very impressed. I can recommend this company."

"The inspection went extremely well! The HVAC technician, Mike B., was extremely professional, arriving within the set 2 hour timeframe, even calling me within 10 mins of his arrival. I had a list of questions for the technician and the technician happily answered all of my questions along with showing me how to change the filter on our system. The technician explained the services that Grove Heating and Cooling offers without any pressure to purchase future services. We liked the service so much that we signed up for our next service with Grove Heating and Cooling, receiving a great discount off the flat rete price of $125."

Customers say: True professional

"Excellent service from Hecomo. Technician did not try to push purchase of a new HVAC system even though there were major issues with our system, feel comfortable while talking with an advisor. Very knowledgeable, patiently, friendly and nice person, answer all my questions. Later on, we decided to replace the whole new system with fair price and wasn’t ripped off as others. Very professional and well trained technician. I will definitely use them again."

"One of my AC compressors was not starting correctly every time. If it did start, it would run fine, but on hot days, when it would cycle frequently, (i.e. cool to target temp, stop, temp would heat up, thermostat would send signal to restart, and eventually the compressor would not restart). I don't remember the exact explanation, but I think there's a small fan linked to the capacitor. The fan provides some cooling to the capacitor which is stressed at startup time. Eventually the capacitor burned out because it wasn't getting its appropriate fan/cooling. First, this is a pretty specific problem. I'm fairly technical myself, and my father can fix anything. We had isolated the issue to the capacitor, but could figure out why it had failed. This is a large home and the large capacitor, so it really was a job for a professional -- capacitors offer plenty of opportunities to electrocute yourself pretty severely if your a "do-it-yourselfer." The No-Frost tech diagnosed the problem within a few minutes and explained it in detail. I called my old man to see what he thought, and confirmed that would definitely explain the problem. Second, the appropriate replacement part was an all-in-one capacitor/fan combo part specifically made by the vendor. Because my unit was a larger-than-typical unit AND these guys rushed out pretty much same day (or next morning -- I think it was a Friday going into a 95 degree weekend). The tech didn't have that exact part on his truck. He gave me two options, he had the same size capacitor and fan unit separately, so he could merge those together and get the unit functioning right then and there, or he could order the part and come back some time the following week -- he called the warehouse and they didn't have it in stock (my compressor is large and 10-years old). Given the weather, and everything else, I had him build the setup I needed, took him about 20 minutes to link the fan and capacitor together and the AC unit was humming along again shortly thereafter. I loved that he took the time to explain the problem in detail. He could tell i was "tinkerer," yet he was very politely patient with my ignorance (I had no idea the capacitor required its own cooling). I loved that he gave me the choice on waiting for the vendor's "officially sanctioned" part or just getting the unit working, and that he took the time to explain why this wasn't a risky workaround. I gave him a nice tip and emailed my neighborhood HOA email group the contact details as a reliable, trustworthy and well-priced service provider who will always go the extra mile for the customer. These guys fixed my furnace a year earlier when I nearly burned my house down by not paying attention to my intake... Would and have definitely recommend these folks for any HVAC needs."

"I received six estimates for replacing my air conditioning system. Of the six, four came in at a reasonable price including the estimate from the Michael Bonsby Company. Three of the four estimators made a good impression but the one who impressed me the most was David Lux of Michael Bonsby. He spent the most time, provided the most information, and fully answered all of my questions in all of my contacts with him prior to signing the contract. Even after I signed the contract, had the system installed, and made final payment, David Lux was still very prompt in answering my inquiries. So far I am very happy with the air conditioning system installed by and I would highly recommend the Michael Bonsby Company if you ever need to replace your air conditioning system."

"Carroll Mechanical delivered a 10/10 experience, from start to finish. From the first call, the Carroll Mechanical team demonstrated that they were knowledgable, ethical, and customer-first. First, they offered to help me troubleshoot, and they gave me some great tips that allowed me to try and fix the problem myself before they made a service call. As a not-so-handy guy, I realized that I needed the pros, so I requested on-site help. They immediately offered to come over on the day and time most convenient for me, and they spent time with me walking through the pros/cons of different HVAC options. Ultimately, the team explained the pros/cons of different remediation options, offered me an extremely competitive quote, and was transparent all along the way. I moved forward with a system replacement, which they were able to accommodate the same week(!!). The Carroll Mechanical team was timely, detail-oriented, and respectful of my home, and the HVAC system was installed as expected."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

While it's generally safe to stay in a home with a coolant leak if your home is properly ventilated, it's important to have a professional come out to assess the situation right away. You should evacuate your home if you notice any powerful fumes. Additionally, you should leave your home if you are experiencing headaches or dizziness.

Window AC units use a fair amount of electricity, but significantly less than central AC systems. Because they are more energy-efficient for cooling individual rooms or small spaces, their usage is comparatively low. On average, a window AC unit consumes between 500 and 1,400 watts, while a central AC system uses over 3,500 watts—meaning a window unit uses about one-third of the energy. This typically translates to a monthly running cost of $15 to $40, although this can vary depending on external factors.

Most HVAC surge protectors last about three to five years, depending on how often your home experiences blackouts or brownouts. If your unit is susceptible to more frequent electrical surges, consider replacing your surge protector every two years. Consult your HVAC professional to determine when and how often to replace your HVAC surge protectors.

To lower humidity quickly, run a dehumidifier or your home's air conditioner or turn on exhaust fans to extract moisture. These methods can quickly and effectively bring your home's humidity levels to a comfortable condition. However, you should consistently practice humidity-reducing tasks to maintain proper indoor humidity levels.

It all depends on the unit’s SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio). A higher SEER rating means better efficiency and lower costs for your energy bills.

Take a look at the product you’re considering purchasing and compare it to other models to decide which one is affordable upfront but will keep your energy costs low over time.
