Malibu Deck Doctor

We can’t say enough good things about the Malibu deck doctor, Fred and his crew were excellent to work with, and did a fantastic job on our deck and Topanga Canyon. As an architect, once you find a good contractor, you want to keep working with them, this is how we felt about Fred. Once the work started, they were on time every day and completed the project on schedule and on budget. There were no change orders, no excuses about not showing up, or anything like that. Just high-quality work. They were also great with our dogs, we didn’t have to worry about them as the project went on. In fact, the dogs helped Fred and his crew! We installed a beautiful hot tub set within decks of multi levels, and Fred was great to work with to conceptualize what we wanted to do, I can’t recommend them highly enough. I only wish I had more work to do!

Fred was extraordinary in a number of ways. Most important, his design and execution/carpentry skills are top notch! He was on premises himself to assure quality control and the end product was exceptionally beautiful. This man is more of an artist than a tradesman, and his end product speaks for itself. Fred built a beautiful treehouse and deck in our back yard and has continued to maintain our deck bi-annually. Everything was done extremely well with tremendous attention to detail. We recommend Fred to all our friends looking at outdoor projects.

It went very well. I now have a storage shed that fits in an unusually-shaped part of my side yard. A prefabricated shed would not have fit so well.

We've been using Malibu Deck Doctor for three years now, ever since we saw one of his beautiful decks at a friend's house. We noticed how well-made it was, and the careful and detailed finishing work that had been done. It was real artistry. Since then we've had Fred and his team add an large new redwood deck on our house in Los Feliz, as well as a new pool and spa enclosure, and various woodworking tasks -- finishing a pool house, installing a pocket door, and various other tasks. Fred's also a master at Ipe and other exotic hardwoods. For example, he designed, sourced, and installed a beautiful reclaimed wood bar for our pool area. At all times, Fred and his team have been professional and given us expert advice on the design, material, and styling. They are tremendously knowledgeable, having decades of experience contracting in the LA area. Having worked with them on four different projects now, we feel really lucky to have crossed paths with his work. We have enthusiastically recommend them to everyone who asks for a referral, and they'll always be our first call for deck and woodworking jobs. They're the best.

Fred has worked wonders on our past-its-prime wooden deck, keeping it sturdy and looking great! He's taken care of our deck for years, and he always does high-quality work.

Fred the Deck Doctor was great to work with and he did an amazing job with our deck.  He takes pride in his work and it comes across in everything he does.  He met our expectations in every way.and went above and beyond in several areas. He was up front about every aspect of the job in terms of cost, timing, quality, etc. I felt like i knew exactly what i was getting and he definitely delivered. I have already recommended him to a few friends and wouldn't hesitate to use him again in the future.

When I first met Fred I was sure he was the guy I wanted to help me with my deck.  He was honest, upfront, flexible and knowledgable.  I liked him right away.  
He came out to give me an estimate mid summer, but because he was so busy we didn't get the work done until mid september, but once he got started it was a breeze.  3 days of work (beating his projection of 4) and the deck looks 10 times better.  It needed additional joists, some boards replaced, sanding and painting, and all was done brilliantly. Fred even did some light gardening around the deck to make it look its best.  
I would highly recommend Fred to anyone who has an existing deck that needs any kind of work done.

What an incredibly wonderful experience.  From the first telephone conversation I had with Fred, I knew immediately that this man really knows wood, knows what products to use and is a true professional.
I had a old redwood fence that had blackened considerably and hadn't been treated in several years.  Fred put on rejuvenator, powerwashed the fence, sanded, then put on two coats of stain.  He also replaced an old latch on the gate and fixed the gate so it would open and close easily.
Fred gave me a very reasonable quote.  He showed up on time (actually early), with his assistant Manuel.  He had quote me 3 days for the job, but the stains dried quickly in the heat and he was finished in 2 days.
My fence looks dynamite!  Brand new.

Wow - did we get lucky finding the Deck Doctor!  I saw an ad for his business and we took a chance getting a quote from him along with a couple of other people that were referred to us.  We definitely made the right choice in hiring Fred.
We have extensively re-modeled both the interior and exterior/yard of our home over the past three years.  I can definitely say that the service and work performed by Fred was the best experience we had with any contractor.  Starting with my initial contact with Fred, he was extremely helpful in offering advice.  He came out to review the job a couple of times before starting.  He was flexible to our needs relating to options of material and extent of the re-build (he provided several quotes offering different options).  His pricing was fair.  Very importantly Fred was very reliable.  He started and finished when he said and he was one of the very few contractors that we have worked with that we didn't have micrro manage as the work was being done.  The job was done perfectly and without any follow-up or supervision.
In the end after discussion and review, we decided to go with a complete deck re-build using ipe wood.  If you are not familiar with it, this wood is beautiful and has many unbelievable qualities (termite proof, very fire resistant, hard - it actually sinks in water it is so dense, etc.).  The work came out beautiful.  I would say that Fred is a true craftsman and professional.  This man loves wood and takes extreme pride in doing a job right.  It is always an extreme pleasure to work with people like this (and unfortunately there are not many of them).  Some examples of specifics from the job:  extremely timely, took no shortcuts and did everything "right" from the way he did the footings to adding crushed stone over the ground under the deck, every cut and measure was done exact (several areas of the deck needed to be aligned with walks and gardens), every screw installed on the surface of the deck was covered with matching wood plugs - the end result looks fantastic (he is a master carpenter), Fred works with a great railing guy and supervised/coordinated his work, and finally he followed-up after he finished the job (and after he was paid) to make sure we were completey satisfied.
I would highly recommend working with this man if you want a first rate job at a fair price that will look absolutely beautiful in the end.  As is obvious from the above, I can't say enough great things about him!

Fred was punctual and very communicative.   He is knowledgable and experienced. He prepared a proposal for the deck replacement in a timely fashion and completed the job within a week.  The work is professional and it looks great.  I recommend him to anyone needing deck work or maintenance

He started work when he say he would.  He had a skilled assistant but he was one the job himself everyday.  The job was finished on time and one budget.  And it looks grand.  The neighbors were asking who did it as soon as they say it.  The Deck Doctor added details and style that were impressive.  I look out at it and ... it is not just complete, it is a work of art.

Mr. Fred was fantastic!  He called me back the same day and made an appointment.  He was on time, experienced, knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and hardworking.  Mr. Fred and Mr. Manuel did a wonderful job!

My husband has used Fred to maintain and improve his house for more than a decade. Fred is a wonderful handyman-- Capable, prompt, friendly, polite, trustworthy, hard-working and dedicated to doing the job right. But woodworking is where he really shines!
When my husband purchased the house, the old redwood spa on the deck was in terrible shape. Fred was able to modify the deck so that a new fiberglass spa fit right in. He's great at figuring out how to get something done, even if it's tricky or unusual.
Our decades-old craftsman style home was originally built and added onto room-by-room, meaning we have a wide range of wood ages and patinas. Fred has been able to add to, repair and replace numerous interior surfaces and cabinets, while making sure everything "goes together" visually and looks beautiful. We've also had him custom-build some furniture for us. When it comes to wood, he is an artist.
