"Jose and his team do high quality work, are neat and tidy (including putting rooms back together end of day mid process so you don't have to live in a construction zone). They also sweep up as well - every day. I have never had professional painters be so diligent about that before! I used C&Painting for a fairly large interior job - and because of the high quality increased the scope to do some outdoor painting as well. Both jobs were done to my very exacting standards. Jose is also very customer focused - every day asking if there are any issues/problems he needs to take care of for that day. Also, their painting is high quality including edging, trim etc. Highly recommend!!"

"This company is awesome! They painted my house inside and out flawlessly! They also installed gorgeous vinyl plank flooring and carpet. I can’t say enough about the quality of the work! Workers were great and very efficient. The only glitz was in communication and that was partially because I’m difficult to reach. Would definitely give them a high recommendation!"

"I highly recommend Emerald Painting. Roland was incredibly responsive and helpful with suggestions. His crew was professional, efficient, and skilled. We love the finished product - new exterior paint on a brick row house, repaired and painted concrete steps and porch, painted steel rail, and stained wooden deck. I will hire Roland and Emerald Painting for all similar future projects."

Customers say: Quick response

"The work of AW Painting was superb in repainting our kitchen, our large family room (with a cathedral ceiling), and an entry way. We received a detailed written estimate within two days of a visit from Carlos, the owner, which AW Painting honored. They started when promised and came each day when promised and cleaned up before they left for the day. They did impeccable work, including in areas one would not normally see, and each member of the team clearly took great pride in his craft. They corrected, without quibble, the usual small nits that arise in every home project. When we had some additional add-on repair projects other than painting. AW Painting provided a fair price and handled them wonderfully. We felt completely comfortable allowing them to work while we were away, which probably was best for everyone involved! When the project was finished, they carted away everything, rather than leaving us to deal with empty cans and other trash. We absolutely will hire AW Painting for any future projects."

"The basics: Ferney Leal is extremely conscientious about the work he does and is very courteous. I would definitely hire him again. Longer story: Ferney always showed up when he said he would. His final bill did not exceed his initial estimate. He and his co-worker were very careful about covering things up, cleaning along the way, letting me know when they had to make noise, notifying me when they took breaks, etc. Ferney called me over several times to show what he was doing, why he was doing it, and to OK the work with me. The work consisted of removing and replacing molding around the window, cutting out a section of drywall, replacing the drywall, painting the drywall, and caulking parts of the window frame."

Interior Painting questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can paint over old exterior paint, but success depends on the condition of the existing paint and proper surface preparation. If the previous coating is in good shape (not cracked, peeling, or flaky), you can paint over it with less prep work. However, for the most durable and professional-looking results, follow these key preparation steps:

  • Clean the Surface: Thoroughly clean the exterior to remove all dirt, grime, and mildew. A pressure washer can be very effective for this.

  • Scrape and Sand: If the old paint is peeling, cracked, or flaky, you must scrape off all loose paint. After scraping, sand the surface to create a smooth, even base for the new paint. Sanding is especially important for wood siding.

  • Apply Primer: Using a quality exterior primer is highly recommended. It ensures the new paint adheres properly, improves durability, and provides a uniform finish. If you are painting a lighter color over a dark one, a tinted primer will help cover the old color more effectively.

Some brands offer paint-and-primer-in-one products for convenience. Taking the time to prepare the surface properly will not only increase your home's curb appeal but also help protect your siding and extend its life.

Some homeowners have luck using pressure washers, but this only works for old or weaker concrete sealants and with very powerful pressure washers. You’ll get better results by pressure washing water-based sealants. However, it’s worth trying on any sealant if you’re hoping for the least toxic, least expensive, and most DIY-friendly option. To try this method, rent or buy the most powerful pressure washer you can find and take several passes at the concrete, completely pressure washing the entire area. You may need to repeat the process multiple times to see results.

WD-40 is an effective way to remove glue and other sticky residue from many surfaces, including wood. Spray the WD-40 on the area, allow the product to sit for a few minutes, then carefully wipe away the residue. As with other adhesive removal methods, test the WD-40 on an inconspicuous spot first to ensure it won’t damage the finish.

You can paint over cracked paint, but only if you properly sand down the damaged areas. Once the surface is as smooth as you can get it, clean the walls and let them dry before applying a new coat of paint. Painting over cracked paint without sanding or cleaning beforehand will not cover up the cracks and may even make them look worse.

You can sand paint off a wall. However, it's difficult and time-consuming. Depending on why you wish to remove the paint, there are simpler ways to achieve similar results. Scraping off any loose paint and applying a skim coat is the most common way to hide a damaged wall or paint job.
