"Hans and his team were outstanding to work with! Hans helped to achieve a vision for our Cape house: a kitchen renovation and converting an attached garage into a beautiful family room space. Excellent detail and workmanship, great communication, very reliable and professional. We would not hesitate to recommend HSO to anyone, they are the BEST!!"

"Pav(lin) is every homeowner’s dream contractor! He is professional, personable and demonstrated care & concern for other parts of our home as well as the specific work we hired him to do. Pav removed the wall-to-wall carpeting on our stairway and two bedrooms, installed laminate flooring, stair treads & wrought iron spindles with our existing bannister. He did a fabulous job and we’re thrilled with the look & results! We enthusiastically recommend Pav to anyone who wants a skilled, meticulous, quality-oriented contractor who takes pride in his work, strives to meet his client’s needs and welcomes his client’s feedback. We will definitely hire Pav for future projects! "

"We recently had an “old school” original 1970’s Cape Cod kitchen fully remodeled including adding a slider. Richard did a great job from planning and design (shout out to Hanna on this), to demo, to install, to finish work. Richard was on time, reliable, and not your typical Cape contractor. Super clean at all times and was able to work with us on various hiccups/unexpected stuff along the way. He explained options and the pros and cons of each possible choice. He never upcharged us (unless we asked for something) and was exactly on budget. Very happy with his work and would definitely recommend. We will likely call on him again for our next project."

"I recently had to have my bathroom remodel in my old farm house and I called Mike from a recommendation from a client. I cannot express how outstanding he is at his job. He is one of the CLEANEST and most conscientious people I have ever met. I could NOT be more satisfied with the job he has done. I definitely will recommend him to my clients over and over again. He is extremely thoughtful and courteous and shows up when he says he will show up. He's thorough and meticulous as well."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Yes, professional installations include reinforced corner posts to ensure durability.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.
