"Remarkably well! After my initial phone conversation we set an appt. for the next day. Neil, a pest control expert arrived promptly. Listened to our concerns and proceeded to inspect every inch of the basement, including crawl space(!), each room on the 1st floor and the attic (a place that's difficult to maneuver). They’re a nuisance, but silverfish aren’t nearly as dangerous as other pests like cockroaches, mice, termites or bed bugs. They don’t carry diseases that humans or pets can catch, and they don’t cause widespread destruction like termites or rats. Silverfish are small and find it very easy to get inside any exposed foodstuffs. Like weevils, you may find them in unprotected flour, cereal, grains, bread boxes, chip packages and more. They will happily nibble fabric and paper as well, so they can cause damage to furniture, clothing, books, bedding, curtains and other materials.

Both spikes and loose nets can be installed over nest sites to prevent the bird from returning, but nets are not a humane option since birds and other wildlife can get tangled in them. 

Spikes are a humane alternative that deter nesting without harming the birds. In small areas, like vents, a very fine mesh net can be installed to prevent the bird from returning. These nets don't generally pose a risk to the birds.

Ticks are most commonly found behind (or even inside) ears, behind knees, in belly buttons, in the hair, and in your underarms. If you find a tick on your body or on your pet, use a pair of clean tweezers to grab the tick as close to the surface of your skin as possible. If you simply yank or twist it, you can leave the tick’s mouth parts lodged in your skin and will need to remove those carefully with the tweezers. 

Once you have removed the tick, flush it down the toilet and wash your skin with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Know the signs of lyme disease such as fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and a rash.

Most people can get rid of drain flies within a week as long as they remain persistent. This is especially important if you’re using a gentler method like vinegar or boiling water. Any eggs left behind can hatch, and the problem can start all over again. If you can’t get rid of the flies within a week or two, consider hiring a pro.

It can be difficult to know what type of animal is in your attic until you see it. But several clues can help you narrow down the suspects:

  • Sounds: Smaller animals like rats and mice make scurrying and tapping/gnawing sounds. Larger animals like raccoons and opossums make louder clambering noises. Also, note when animals are noisy: Squirrels are active during the day, while rats are busiest at night.

  • Droppings: Rats and mice leave small, rice-shaped droppings (the rat’s version is significantly larger). Bigger droppings belong to larger critters like raccoons. As long as you’re not squeamish, an image search can help you identify what you’re seeing in your attic.

When in doubt, take photos of damage or other evidence and show them to an experienced pest control pro.
