"Mr. Phalan took care of a tricky repair to an old style solid wood exterior door on a 2nd floor deck. The door was quite heavy and had several glass panels in it, too. Bob quickly rebuilt the busted hinge and had the old door working “better than new”, in about 30 minutes. Quick and clean job!"

"The entire experience with PROEDGE has been wonderful. We first met with there consultant Walter S. who listened to exactly what my wife and I were looking for and to accomplish. He went thru our options and made the project very affordable with a substantial discount and very competitive financing. The installation went VERY SMOOTH. Bobby D. and his team were very efficient and neat in installing our 12 new custom built windows and a new door. The project was done ALL IN ONE DAY! We could not be happier with the results and we HIGHLY RECOMMEND. The savings we are experiencing on our electric bill has been SUBSTANTIAL. OVER 40% from last year…and electricity has gone up! And it’s much more quiet in our home from outside noises. THANK YOU PROEDGE for everything! You have a customer for life."

Glaziers questions, answered by experts

The best tool for DIYers to use to cut glass is a glass cutter, which can either use a straight blade or a sharp cutting wheel to score glass. Once you score the lines you want to cut, elevate the scored line over a pivot point and apply light, even pressure to both sides. Make sure you wear protective gloves and glasses to stay safe during the process.

Cutting glass yourself can be dangerous, as the edges are sharp and can easily cause lacerations if you’re not careful. Working with larger pieces of glass is especially dangerous, as they can be cumbersome and difficult to handle without shattering. If you’re uncomfortable doing the work yourself, you can hire a professional to get the job done safely.

Using caulk is one of the simplest and most recommended methods to finish glass tile edges. It creates an elegant seam between the glass tile and the adjacent area, along with a waterproof seal. With this method, you want to use a caulk color that matches the grout and, along with the grout, compliments the tile. Make sure the caulk line is smooth and even. Alternatively, you can use a bullnose or tile trimming to edge, however, that will also require caulk to seal.

Storm door panels are typically made from tempered or laminated glass, and each type has its benefits. Tempered glass goes through a special heating and cooling process, increasing its strength and durability. It’s known for its safety features—when it breaks, it shatters into small, relatively harmless pieces rather than sharp shards. Laminated glass is made by sandwiching a layer of plastic between two layers of glass. This interlayer holds the glass pieces together even when shattered, preventing them from scattering.

To tell if a window is single or double-pane, focus on the edge. Double-pane windows have two glass layers separated by a spacer, which you can usually see around the edges. For single-pane windows, it’s just one sheet of glass. Another easy trick: shine a light at the window—single-pane glass reflects once, while double-pane glass reflects twice. Lastly, if you feel both sides of the glass on a cold day, double-paned windows will feel warmer because of the insulating gap between the panes.
