"John Cooper Paving & Sealing is the best. I just had my driveway resealed by them and they did a fantastic job. They sealed 2 cracks I had in my driveway, then used a squeegee to spread the sealcoat on my driveway, they didn't miss any spots. My driveway looks brand new again, so happy with the job they did!"

"We are extremely happy with the job Chris and co. did in replacing our old concrete walkway with bricks. They worked neatly and efficiently and Chris helped us see our vision clearly. He’s a great guy, and has very fair pricing. We hope to use him on a project in the future. Deb D Bedford"

"I asked that some leaves be removed (with a blower) which they had on their truck. Without clearing the leaves it seemed that the seeds wouldn't be planted properly. The guys arrived on time and called ahead to let me know when they would arrive. I declined the fertilization because most fertilizers are petroleum based products. I wanted to keep my lawn "organic and wasn't sure that would be possible. The guys were here around 30-40 minutes. When I requested for them to park in driveway instead of in my neighbor's parking space. They said they would move if he arrived. They said removing leaves wasn't park of the job and then charged me an extra $150 for blowing the leaves off the area and bagging them. I thought that would have been part of the job in order to insure success. Since I wasn't using the fertilizer I asked if they could help set up a hose in order to irrigate the lawn. ( I am disabled and could not walk without pain) . They did not do that. I asked how to avoid having the birds eat the seed that they were spreading. They said keep it wet. I figured with the extra $150 dollars they should have been willing to help set this up. I was told to get some compost and spread it over the seeds to keep birds from eating it. This could have been done by them."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

By grading and compacting the base soil, ensuring proper drainage and stability.

This creates a risk for your driveway to fail after asphalt curing because it doesn't have a lasting bond with the surface. In order to get asphalt to perform as intended, it's necessary to prepare the dirt surface correctly first. The loose soil base under the new driveway must be compacted until it is stable enough to support the weight of the asphalt.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.

If your driveway is cracked, you can repave it with a process called asphalt overlay. Overlay is more cost-effective than a full replacement but is better suited for minor cracks and issues. If you have major cracks or other problems like water pooling, asphalt overlay isn’t your best bet. Plus, paving over a cracked driveway only extends the lifetime by about 10 years, whereas replacing it would start the clock over completely to give you up to 30 years.
