"I recently hired Coen Brothers Construction on a thorough bathroom renovation, and the outcome was outstanding. Their quality was excellent, and I am delighted with the final result. Their sub-contractors were also great and worked at the same high standards as the Coen Brothers. Although we faced some communication issues at the outset, we eventually worked through them, and it significantly improved throughout the project. They paid attention to detail; when my project manager saw me stripping the trim for reuse, they recommended buying new trim and a lumber yard to get it. And it makes a big difference having new trim with clean, sharp lines. Their tile work took longer than expected, but the miter cuts the trim cuts, and the finish is excellent. They were consistently punctual, respectful of my home, and very tidy - tidying up at the end of each day. While the project took longer than anticipated, the reasonable cost and the team's meticulous attention to detail compensated for it. You’ll want to have your palm trees trimmed during the spring, ideally in May, before hurricane season sets in, which generally takes place during the late summer. Palm trees grow fastest over the summer months. You’ll also want to trim your palm trees when you notice:

  • Brown fronds 

  • Dry leaves

  • Flower pods

  • Fruit

  • Fronds overgrown in power lines

  • Frond encroaching upon your neighbor’s home or yard 

  • Visible damage from a storm

Make sure the tree roots soak around a day before you dig the tree up for the transplant. Keep the roots wet while the tree is above ground. After the transplant is finished, provide consistent water every day for the first month or so. You don’t want to overwater the tree, but you do want to keep the roots wet so they can thrive in their new environment.

Yes, you can prune a palm tree with a chainsaw, but a chainsaw is overkill for a job like this. You risk damaging the tree if you make a bad cut. More commonly, you’ll need pruning shears or a serrated knife to trim a palm tree, or you can use a specialized pruning saw instead of a chainsaw.

If major support roots are cut, the tree may become unstable. Many are located just below the soil’s surface. Even cutting roots that are less than one-half inch under or outside the edge of a tree’s canopy can cut off its water, causing it to decline, die, and eventually topple.

Generally, you’ll want to prune back the trunk by 1 to 2 feet each year to promote bushy growth. Doing so concentrates vegetative buds closer to the bottom of the tree, where you can easily harvest fruit. For side shoots that are a year old, leave at least six leaves. 

Never remove more than 30% of a tree’s foliage during pruning—even if your tree is really overgrown. Removing this much foliage at a time could kill your tree.
