"Moises and his crew were fabulous! Not only did they engage quickly and provide and estimate quickly but they showed up when they said they would and left the work site in better shape than it was when they got here. The work they did to basically redo my front porch was excellent and fairly priced. I would recommend this Pro to anyone looking for carpentry worn on the eastern Massachusetts area. I have already made verbal references citing how great my experience was with Moises Carpentry and Painting!"

"Osmin and his team did a great job replacing our triple-decker back porch. He worked with an architect, that he found, to make sure there were no variances required. This made the permitting process quicker. It was a tricky job because building codes have changed since the porch was first built."

"I hired Bob to fix an exterior door frame that had some rot in it. He was friendly, punctual, and honest about what I did and didn't need done. He came back himself to do the job within a week or so and also explained to me how to maintain the parts that didn't need his help right now. I would hire him again."

"My project goal was to build a new detached garage. The garage was 30x40, 3 bays, with a semi finished second floor. The site was located on a relatively steep grade where extensive tree removal and excavation was required. The project lasted 2.5 months and Ryan was one of the few contractors who meticulously quoted the project allowing him to not only present competitive pricing, but also accurate pricing. The project did not go over budget and was finished on time. Ryan's crews worked long hours through all weather. The few minor issues I experienced with the project, Ryan responded immediately and in person to ensure it was handled. I would recommend Ryan and his crew to anyone looking to build an addition, remodel, or new construction."

"Our existing bathroom was a half bathroom with sink vanity, toilet, washer and dryer. We needed to eliminate laundry equipment and add shower and closet in the space that was designated for a washer and dryer, and add outside venting. We also wanted to tile the whole bathroom up to the ceiling. The job was performed excellent and we are very happy with the choices we made. Bill Perry and his crew were working in our house before renovating basement and building rooms there, so we knew that they were the best company for us. They were great giving us advice to improve on things that we wanted done, so they look and work better with a given space. We are very happy again. Thank you Perry Brothers!"

Customers say: Quick response

Hello, I am James Gibbs, sole proprietor of JG Carpentry. I have been building, repairing and renovating homes in Essex county for over 30 years. My primary goal is to satisfy my customer's needs and budget. I work alone, so I only take on smaller jobs as this allows me to focus on getting things done quickly and efficiently. I hold an unrestricted Construction Supervisor's License and Home Improvement Contractor license in MA and am fully insured. I am experienced in all aspects of residential construction, specializing in interior remodeling and custom built-in installation. I am willing to work with older homes, repairing ill-fitting doors and windows, squeaky stairs and floors, etc. I spent 6 years as a construction foreman in the film industry, and am always willing to take on creative or unusual projects. \n All my work is done in accordance with local building laws, and all jobs must have a contract signed by both parties before work can begin. No plumbing or electrical work.

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are a variety of second-story deck privacy ideas depending on your budget and aesthetic. For starters, you might consider fencing or tall privacy railing that masks a good portion of the open deck. A pergola or an awning can provide additional cover and shade. Outdoor curtains are an easy way to add or remove privacy at your convenience, plus they’re a wallet-friendly way to decorate your deck.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.
