"Moises Carpentry & Painting did an excellent job! He is a true gem! This job involved some outdoor work repairing woodpecker damage and other bird damage to our window frames. He quoted a fair price and arrived right on time. Instead of just patching he removed the sections of damaged molding and custom cut replacement molding to match the existing sections. Then they came back the next day and painted the new molding to match. They worked hard and efficiently without drama and did a thorough cleanup at the end. I give them my highest recommendation!"

"Osmin and his team did a great job replacing our triple-decker back porch. He worked with an architect, that he found, to make sure there were no variances required. This made the permitting process quicker. It was a tricky job because building codes have changed since the porch was first built."

Customers say: Terrific value

"Rudy and his team from RUDY’S CARPENTRY AND PAINTING were great to work with, he did a thorough walk through to ensure he knew exactly what repairs we needed done, and then was quick to send over an accurate estimate. The work was timely, on budget, with no issues. I appreciated their flexibility and crews' ability in carpentry work. They removed the old rotten wooden posts on our deck and replaced them with new ones from pressure treated wood. I would highly recommend using RUDY’S CARPENTRY AND PAINTING for all kinds of jobs inside and outside of house as this is a very professional and hard working team."

Customers say: True professional

"Great! Richard was able to take the vision I had in mind and transfer it to paper down to every last detail. I needed to get a variance from the city of Boston and he went with me to the building department for the hearing. He helped with building permits, communicating with the building inspectors, organizing deliveries and securing parking, which is not easy to do in the city. The specifications he created for the entire project were precise and very detailed. This turned out to be incredibly helpful when a new electrician took over mid-project and was able to pick up exactly where the first electrician had left off. The quality of the work done by the subcontractors Richard hired for me was exceptional - I would highly recommend each and every one of them. The project was delayed quite a bit because of building restrictions in the city of Boston due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but when work was able to resume, each subcontractor got to work as quickly and efficiently as possible. Richard is an excellent communicator with me and the entire team. He is constantly communicating behind the scenes, keeping to a schedule as much as possible and making sure I am aware of the plan at all times. He has also connected the team through his innovative platform called iCornerstone - where each team member can follow along with the progress of the project without having to be on site. Not to be forgotten and probably most important of all is that Richard is a genuinely kind, thoughtful, caring and warm individual - it has been a pleasure to work with him on this project and I am delighted with beautiful and comfortable space he has created for me."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

The cost to frame a 2,000-square-foot house can fall anywhere between $14,000 and $32,000. This price can increase or decrease depending on what type of framing you choose, the quality of the materials, the project's complexity, and whether you decide to hire a professional to do the job.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.
