"I hired Bob to fix an exterior door frame that had some rot in it. He was friendly, punctual, and honest about what I did and didn't need done. He came back himself to do the job within a week or so and also explained to me how to maintain the parts that didn't need his help right now. I would hire him again."

"It was a pleasure working with Ryan Norman on the extensive interior renovation of our 1895 Andover home, and we are incredibly pleased with the results. Every phase of this project was well organized and managed, starting with the contracting negotiation phase. Ryan patiently worked with us to revise the contract multiple times to include as many details up front as possible, so as to minimize unexpected surprises from both the construction and cost perspective. We found his trade crews took pride in the high quality of their work, a reflection of their attention to detail. We also found Ryan’s costs to be market competitive, and the few unexpected expenses were discussed in advance and transparently explained. We realized various value-add modifications during the process and Ryan gamely and easily made the improvements. As homeowners, we were very picky about the final, high-end finish for this kitchen and bath remodeling; and, so, we approached Ryan already having selected a granite fabricator and cabinetry supplier. While I have no doubt that Ryan can make excellent referrals to integrate these services on any project, he worked professionally and seamlessly with these other companies. Ryan also kept up good communication to ensure that we made finish selections on time to avoid undue delays. Ryan brought all of the pieces together to deliver a beautiful product in a timely fashion. Work included: chimney removal; kitchen and bath demolition to the studs; hardwood floor removal, subfloor modifications and hardwood floor installation; significant carpentry, plumbing, electrical, plastering, tiling and painting; re-framing and installation of windows and doors; and installation of high end built-in appliances and custom cabinetry with crown and other trim details. All inspections easily passed, and we have great confidence in the construction and will enjoy our beautiful new kitchen and bath for years to come! We highly recommend your working with Ryan Norman on your next project!"

"Excellent. From our initial communication with Bill Perry, reviewing the work that needed to be done and giving us a cost with price breakdown, it all took place quickly and professionally. When the deck could not be done until spring, we were concerned that the deck would not hold up through winter. Bill sent one of his men, Mike to build supports under the deck. He did a great job. Carpenters, Dan, Juan and Mike were professional, respectful and punctual. Their attention to detail was excellent. They worked through some very cold days and always cleaned up at the end of each day. Dan always communicated when a change was needed or extra work needed to be done. We decided to put solar lights on the deck, and after a conversation with Dan decided to go with a different idea than we had planned. We ended up ordering lights that Mike found on Amazon which ended up working out perfectly.. Very happy with work that was done and the professionalism of the crew. Would rehire Perry Construction."

"I hired Peter to add some windows to my home. He framed in the openings and installed the windows. The siding had to all be removed and he took the time to re-install it properly. When the job was done the windows looked like they were always there. I also had him finish off the inside and added some shadow boxes and build a mantel around my fireplace which made it look like a new room. He was very reliable with reasonable prices and I would not hesitate to hire him again or recommend him to others."

"Aurelio and his AML team were wonderful to work with. Their hard work, attention to detail and effort to accommodate all of our needs was greatly appreciated. They completed 8 projects: installed a new 18’ x 24’ patio with fire pit, replaced old steps with a beautiful new deck, replaced rotted siding with new siding, replaced garage roof, built a pergola with a swing, planted a Zen garden around the swing, built a 8’ x 60’ bocce court, built six 8’ x 4’ cedar raised garden beds and a beautiful fence to protect the garden. In addition, they did a complete yard clean up and installed mulched beds, cobble stone edging and pea stone paths. All this was accomplished in 13 days by a team of four that worked non-stop!! I wish I could publish before and after pictures because that is the only way to show the amazing transformation of our property. The quality of their carpentry was also top notch. Very highly recommended!!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Yes, you can hang picture frames, shelves, and other items on Trusscore panels. For lightweight items (less than 30 pounds), the company recommends using adhesive strips rather than nails or screws. However, you’ll need to secure heavier objects to a stud in the wall. In these situations, Trusscore recommends cutting away the panel material and fastening the object to the stud with metal hardware.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
