Customers say: True professional

"From the first contact with Gary Locatelli Smith I knew I was in the hands of a professional with a long history of great customer service and experience in the trade. He answered my email and phone call within two days, and set up an appointment to come to my home within a week. I showed him the fabric I had purchased and wanted to use and after he gave me a quote on the cost for two sofa slipcovers I readily agreed and he started cutting and measuring the slipcovers on the spot. I provided the material so I only paid for labor. He did a wonderful job on the slipcovers, which fit to perfection. I originally wanted a certain style of slipcover, but he made other recommendations based on the material that I provided and I am so happy I agreed to it. In addition to the two slipcovers he also upholstered a bench using beautiful nail heads and reupholstered a day bed. I was satisfied with the time it took and would use him again anytime! P.S. Nine years ago I paid double for 2 sofa slipcovers using another service, which is why I didn't use them again. Locatelli Smith Interiors had my business as soon as I met Gary and he gave me the quote. He stuck to the quote and did a great job! He knows what he is doing! I couldn't be happier to have found a great upholsterer!"

"I have a family member who is disabled, and spends most of her time in a particular upholstered chair. The seat cushion on that chair these days was not very supportive. Yesterday my relative was out at a doctor's appointment, so I called Landry Home Decorating and spoke with Mary. I explained the situation, and asked if they might have some time either Monday (yesterday) or Weds (when Eleanor would also be away from the house) to put a new insert in the cushion while I waited. Mary checked to see if they had the right materials and enough time to complete the job. Then she said if I wanted to, I could come in right away. So! I snatched the seat cushion off the comfy chair and hopped in the car. Mary arranged for someone to take the cushion and do the work while I waited. I browsed their extensive "library" of upholstery fabric sample books, and before I knew it, the cushion was ready! Really, it couldn't have taken much more than 15 minutes, 20 at the most. I had paid while the cushion was being worked on, so as soon as it was ready, I dashed out the door for home. Luck was with me, I was able to get in and get the cushion back in place before Eleanor made it upstairs and headed for her chair. It was a nice surprise for her. So, thank you to John Landry, and Mary, and the helper who put the new insert into the cushion. You were all friendly, helpful and efficient, and really made my day. I'm attaching a picture of Eleanor in her chair, after the cushion was put back in place. She's a happy camper! Thanks again for helping make this happen."

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

Combining upholstering with other home upgrades in Ipswich, such as refinishing woodwork or updating insulation, can reduce disruption and protect your investment. Scheduling upholstery work after painting or floor refinishing prevents accidental damage to new fabrics. Coordinating projects during the off-peak seasons in MA may help with contractor availability and streamline timelines, especially for historic homes requiring specialized care.

Helpful?

The state of your Ipswich property directly impacts upholstery choices. For homes with high humidity or drafty windows, moisture-resistant and tightly woven fabrics are ideal. In historic homes, selecting period-appropriate textiles and considering original woodwork placement preserves authenticity. Assessing room usage and future renovation plans ensures your upholstered pieces are both functional and visually cohesive with the unique style and climate challenges of Ipswich.

Helpful?

In Ipswich, upholstering projects often use modular or reconfigurable furniture to allow for easy adjustments as your property evolves. For historic homes, professionals recommend reversible fabrics and slipcovers that can be updated without replacing the entire piece. Considering the coastal climate, selecting mildew-resistant materials ensures longevity. Planning upholstery layouts with potential expansions in mind helps maintain room flow and preserves the home’s architectural character.

Helpful?

Homeowners in Ipswich can create an effective upholstery maintenance routine by inspecting for salt air residue and moisture buildup each spring, especially in coastal areas. In summer, check for fading from strong sunlight and rotate cushions to even out wear. During fall, vacuum and treat fabrics to prevent mold as humidity rises. In winter, monitor for dryness or static, particularly in homes with older heating systems.

Helpful?

For Ipswich homes, keep a vacuum with upholstery attachments, lint rollers, and a soft-bristled brush for regular cleaning. Store a pH-neutral upholstery cleaner and a dehumidifier to combat coastal humidity. For historic homes, gentle fabric protectors and cedar sachets help deter pests. Having a small sewing kit and fabric adhesive on hand allows for quick repairs, while a list of local upholstery specialists is useful for larger issues.
