"So I had a water heater that was totaled, went on Angi, I was recommended A&B plumbing, AL came on Memorial Day, didn’t charge me extra for the holiday, I was expecting he take out the old heater and come back tomorrow, but not AL he came back the same day and installed a new water heater. I would recommend A&B plumbing, great price, great service, and on time and very polite. Thanks AL."

"I had what turned out to be a clogged pipe going from the house to our septic tank at midnight. I hired another plumbing contractor to come and fix it overnight, as Rooter-Man's 24x7 operator didn't pass on the message. The first contractor started to drain the water from the entire system via a trickle into a 5 gallon bucket at $255/hour. After 2 hours, I sent him home and continued to drain the system for another 3-4 hours on my own, with the expectation that he would return in the morning to continue. I received a call early in the morning from Chris at Rooter-Man. I asked him about the approach that the first contractor had taken, and he suggested that draining the system wasn't necessary. He indicated that the proper approach under the circumstances was to first open the septic tank, to insure that the levels were proper, to prohibit backflow into the home, and pump it out if necessary (it was not). Once open, cleaning the drain by snaking from the outside, through the septic tank, would provide the solution without draining the system. After careful consideration, I called the first contractor back and asked him not to come, and called back Chris and had him complete the job. He was very conscientious, calling when he was on his way, to insure that I was expecting him. I walked him through everything and he was able to complete the job in roughly 1 hour, including cleaning up for the first contractor. He was courteous and friendly, clearly had a command of the issue and executed like an experienced professional. His price was less than what I had prepared for. The fact that I was unable to contact him overnight is my only criticism, and why my overall rating is 4.5, rather than 5. When I asked him this, he resolved to find and correct the issue with the answering service operator. He also indicated that when deciding who to contract with, for a problem such as mine, to try to use a "drain professional", rather than a plumber, as the approach taken may vary (as I found out). FWIW, I initially called Roto-Rooter, who offers 24x7 service, and they also did not call me back until the next morning, despite promises to the contrary. I would recommend Chris & Rooter-Man without any reservations."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

Watch out for contractors who refuse to provide a written, itemized estimate or demand large upfront cash payments. A major red flag is a quote that ignores the need for permits for significant plumbing work. In MA, contractors must account for local climate factors like freeze protection. Avoid professionals who overlook the specific pipe materials common in older properties, such as cast iron or galvanized steel. Always hire a licensed professional.

Helpful?

First, identify your water source and service line material. Many older properties feature outdated infrastructure, so hire a professional to inspect for lead solder, galvanized steel, or cast iron pipes. Next, locate and test all shutoff valves to ensure they operate smoothly during emergencies. Because MA experiences deep winter freezes, prioritize winterizing exposed plumbing in unheated basements or garages. Finally, verify your septic system compliance if you are off the municipal sewer.

Helpful?

Schedule an inspection if you notice a significant drop in water pressure or rust-colored water, which indicate failing galvanized pipes. Multiple slow drains throughout the house signal a main line issue requiring immediate attention. In Athol, check for unexplained water stains on ceilings or walls after a cold winter, as these point to freeze damage. Address any necessary outdoor plumbing winterization before the fall freeze season begins to protect your home.

Helpful?

Start by locating and testing your main water shutoff valve in case of emergencies. For minor seasonal plumbing preparation in Athol, disconnect and drain outdoor hoses before the first hard freeze. Insulate exposed pipes in unheated spaces to prevent burst lines. Clear a single slow drain with a manual drain snake, but avoid chemical cleaners that damage older pipes. For any work involving supply lines inside walls, hire a licensed professional.

Helpful?

Document the year your home was built and identify your existing pipe materials, such as copper or cast iron. Note whether your property connects to the Athol municipal sewer or relies on a private septic system. Record exactly when the issue started and which specific fixtures are affected. Take clear photos of any visible leaks, water stains, or backups. Finally, locate your main shutoff valve and note any access limitations for the contractor.
