"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. Recommended and installed a stainless liner and cap for the furnace flue and a new damper on the fireplace flue. Their price was better than previous quotes and even set up a partial payment plan. I am very pleased with the work they did."

"We've worked twice with Flue Flusher: once to bring a chimney up to specs and again to prep for a wood stove install. Both times, they've been prompt, efficient, cheerful, and so helpful. The most recent job, the crew were merry as Christmas elves, and extremely generous with their time in explaining and helping us research the steps we needed to take. They always clean up after a job, and leave minimal impact on the house and family for the day. We so appreciate Flue Flusher Chimney Service, and how they've helped us make our home less vulnerable in winter, heating our house safely!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Wood is classified as either hardwood or softwood. For firewood, hardwoods are generally the best choice as they tend to burn longer, hotter, and produce less smoke than softwoods. Recommended hardwoods include oak, hickory, maple, cherry, ash, beech, birch, elm, and walnut. Oak is a particularly good option as it's widely available, slow-burning, and doesn't produce much smoke or sparks. Some woods, like oak, hickory, and cherry, also emit a pleasant scent. It is best to avoid softwoods such as eucalyptus, poplar, and willow, as they create a lot of smoke and have a high moisture content that makes them difficult to light and burn efficiently.

You should get your chimney cleaned around once per year, but you might want to opt for bi-annual cleanings if you use your fireplace often. Remember, your boiler likely vents into your chimney as well, so cleaning is required even if you don’t use your fireplace. It’s a good idea to clean your chimney during the summer so that it’s ready to use when you want a worry-free cozy fire on that first crisp autumn night of the season.

Clean regularly, check for cracks, and inspect the chimney annually for safety.

Cracks in the chimney can be very serious, depending on their location and size. Even small cracks can become serious over time if left unrepaired. Cracks allow heat and moisture to deteriorate your chimney and harmful carbon monoxide gas to seep into your home. Small cracks can often be caulked, while large cracked sections may require full replacement.

If you're looking for supplemental heating for your home, an electric fireplace can be worth purchasing. A prefab, freestanding model will only set you back a few hundred dollars and can help to heat up drafty or cooler rooms. Electric fireplaces don't have the maintenance requirements of gas or wood-burning fireplaces and don't require you to buy wood or other fuel.
