"June 13, 2025 (First Visit): The technician injected 5.5 lbs. of refrigerant into the system (which holds up to 8 lbs) without performing a leak test to identify the root cause. I was charged $522.50 for this service. The repair failed two nights later, as the refrigerant leaked out again. June 16, 2025 (Second Visit): A leak test was finally performed, which located the leak in the evaporator coil inside the attic s air handler. I was charged an additional $250 for this diagnostic. The technician recommended replacing the coil and sent an estimate, which I approved. June 26, 2025 (Third Visit): The technician replaced the evaporator coil and recharged the system with 8 lbs. of refrigerant. I was charged $3,504.90 for this visit. However, the system failed again the next day when the breaker tripped due to a grounded compressor an issue that had not been diagnosed earlier. June 27, 2025 (Fourth Visit): Upon inspection, the technician confirmed the compressor in the outdoor unit had shorted. While on a call with the business owner, the technician charged my credit card for the full invoice amount of $3,504.90 before presenting the invoice or explaining the outcome of the repair. He then left without further explanation, stating that the business owner would follow up. Later that day, the business owner called to suggest replacing the entire HVAC system with one of the proposals from the earlier estimate. This recommendation should have been made prior to investing in the costly and ultimately ineffective coil replacement. At no point was I advised that the repair approach might not be viable or that full system replacement should be considered. To make matters worse, I later discovered that the technician had damaged the attic hatch during service and failed to disclose it."

Heating Oil questions, answered by experts

A geothermal heat pump system will take about 10 years to pay for itself, and it has a life span of anywhere from about 25 to 50 years. Installing a geothermal heat pump will cost about $14,250 upfront, but it can reduce your energy bills by around 65% when compared to a conventional HVAC system.

HVAC systems usually last between 10 and 30 years, with most having a lifespan of around 20 years. Factors that impact a unit’s life expectancy include which brand you choose, how often you use it, and how well you maintain it. To make sure yours lasts as long as possible, make sure to keep it clean and schedule an annual service with an HVAC technician.

You need to service an HVAC system about twice per year, with a service including an inspection and basic maintenance. It’s best to schedule maintenance in the spring (after the furnace has been running and before the AC kicks on) and in the fall (after the AC worked hard all summer and before winter’s first chill arrives).

Regular HVAC services will keep the system working as efficiently as possible, saving you money on utilities and larger repairs. HVAC maintenance costs around $250 per visit, while bigger repairs from forgotten upkeep could cost thousands.

An evaporator or swamp cooler is a common alternative for small spaces. These coolers blow moist air into a space to help cool it down. They are more affordable than misters and use much less water. However, coolers will not have the same cooling effect as misters, cannot help plants survive the heat, and only reach a small area.

For most systems, an annual HVAC system service is more than enough. Some homeowners prefer a twice-a-year visit to ensure the system is ready for the upcoming summer and winter seasons. If you need to call an HVAC pro more often than this, it may be time to check if your system is getting old enough for a replacement.
