"These guys are real pros. The representative on the phone was very professional and courteous. The estimate was right on and the price was very reasonable. The total cost of the job was only $100 over the cost of doing it myself including product and renting a blower. I will contact them again when I am ready to add insulation to my existing structure."

"This is the company to hire. Personal attention to inform me of all phases of beefing up my insulation, sealing vents, can lights, and addressing inspection report finding of lack of insulation in certain sectionsituations of my attic. Also solved problem of bathroom fans venting in attic . I called 3 companies. 1. Never got back to me, 2. Didn't want to come out and I could just send pics to them. UHL was prompt, efficient, competitive fair priced. I will be saving on my utilities. If Highly recommend!"

"From Taylor's consultation to the installers we were very pleased with this experience. They were respectful of our time and property. I was very comfortable having them in my home. Sometimes it is difficult to do a home improvement that doesn't have visual results. However, we are already very glad we made the energy upgrades. Even after a day there is a significant difference in the temperature in the upstairs of our home. Y'all are awesome. Thank you so much for improving our home!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

On average, insulating an attic costs about $2,500, with a typical range of $1,500 to $3,500. The final price often depends on the attic's size, with costs generally falling between $1 to $3 per square foot. For example, insulating a 1,800-square-foot attic would likely cost between $1,800 and $5,400.

If the project involves removing old insulation, this can add an average of $900 to the total cost, bringing a full removal and reinsulation project to around $3,000.

Several factors influence the overall cost:

  • Insulation Type: Prices per square foot vary significantly by material.

  • Reflective: $0.50–$1.50

  • Blown-in: $1–$4

  • Batt: $2–$4

  • Loose-fill: $2–$5

  • Spray foam: $2–$5

  • Structural insulated panels (SIPs): $4–$7

  • Project Complexity: Factors like sealing air leaks, poor attic accessibility, and required inspections can add to the cost.

  • Removal Issues: The discovery of mold, asbestos, or pests during the removal of old insulation can substantially increase the price.

Generally, the cost of ice dam removal is not covered by homeowners insurance because it is often considered preventable maintenance. However, the damage caused by ice dams is frequently covered. Depending on your policy, this can include interior water damage, roof collapses, and damage to shingles. Coverage for personal belongings affected by leaks may vary. It is important to check your policy details or contact your insurer to confirm what your plan covers. Keep in mind that any damage resulting from a DIY attempt to remove an ice dam will likely not be covered.

Don’t install insulation near water heaters, oil burners, or any other object that gets hot. Many insulation materials are fire-resistant, but not entirely fire-proof, so you should take precautions to keep hot things away from fiberglass. This is also why it is imperative to box off lighting fixtures and breaker boxes.

Closed-cell foam may come with a higher price tag, but it’s worth the investment because of its strength and durability. This material offers excellent thermal and moisture resistance, contributing to its long life span. Its construction enhances energy efficiency, which can lead to reduced heating and cooling costs over time.

To keep cold out, look for treatments that sit close to the window frame and are made from thick, insulating materials. Thermal curtains, cellular shades, window quilts, and insulated shutters can all help retain heat. Layering window treatments, like pairing lined curtains with cellular shades, can provide even better insulation by further reducing drafts and heat transfer.
