"Michael is an outstanding structural engineer and fantastic businessman. From the time of our first call through well after the project, he was professional and helpful. He clearly explained his process and made sure I was able to understand his conclusions. He went well above and beyond to make sure that we got what we needed to move forward with our next phases of work. In addition to providing the engineering diagrams we needed, he explained the math behind them in clear and easily understood terms. A man of integrity, he did everything he promised he would do and more. Hopefully, I won't have need of a structural engineer again in the near future but if I do, I wouldn't hesitate to call Michael first."

"They did an excellent job. The wall looks better than it did when we bought the house. They were informative and willing. Their fee was very reasonable. We will be using them again on another project."

"Very professional, completed the project in the promised timeframe, and kept us informed of their progress throughout the job. They cleaned up thoroughly and answered all of our questions. They did a great job of inspecting the issue and setting up what needed to be done to fix the foundation. We were very pleased with the work they did and so we went back to them for the additional work. Highly recommend."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

The primary reason homes have crawl spaces is so the foundation can reach down below the frost line to avoid dangerous soil movement and structural damage when the ground freezes. They’re more popular in colder climates where the ground freezes down to a few feet, and slabs are most popular in warmer areas where there is no frost line. Crawl spaces also provide a space for utility lines to run where they’re at less of a risk of freezing.

If you’re building new construction or adding onto your existing home, hiring a structural engineer is not only worth it but it’s probably required by your local building department. Structural engineers will ensure you aren’t making your home unsafe in the building process, which is crucial from a safety perspective but also a legal one. It’s also worth hiring a structural engineer if you’re making changes to structural components, like removing a load-bearing wall.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Precast concrete can be reinforced with rebar, wire mesh, or other materials to improve its strength and add stability. Precast concrete for large construction projects is often pre-stressed as well for greater structural strength. Reinforced concrete is durable and strong, making it an ideal choice for many construction projects.

The essential difference between an architect and an engineer is that architects typically focus more on the aesthetic design of buildings, although not without consideration for the structural integrity of the building. Engineers focus more on the structural, technical, and practical aspects of whether and how an architectural design can be built as drawn. You may need to hire both types of professionals if you’re designing and building a new home.
