My Kenmore Elite dishwasher was purchased about 2 years old at Sears and is covered by a maintenance agreement. It began leaking and created a puddle. I called for Sears service due to the maintenance agreement. It took about a week for them to send a technician. He quickly diagnosed the problem and ordered a new sump and new motor and said the parts would be shipped directly to my home by UPS. He scheduled follow-up service for the next week. The parts came the day before the scheduled service call. The technician who came to complete the repair was Scott, and was a different person from the first technician. He showed me where the leak was occurring and why both parts needed replacement. He was able to do the repair without pulling the dishwasher out from under the cabinet and I was glad because the installed fit is tight with only about 1/4 inch clearance. It took him slightly longer than 30 minutes to do the fix. Scott was very knowledgeable and also pointed out that the installation was unusual and also not correct. (This dishwasher location is not next to the sink but is instead located at a right-hand angle on the adjoining cabinet section. The water and drain connections are made underneath the dishwasher in the unfinished part of the basement below, not under the sink.) The installation was done two years ago by Sears and it replaced an existing dishwasher in the same location. That installation was NOT done by A&E Factory Service--Sears used a different company at that time. That installation had failed to provide an air gap device to keep water from siphoning from the dishwasher. Lack of a proper air gap could result in the water needed for washing or draining being siphoned out and not being sufficient for the wash/rinse. Scott explained that the gurgling sounds in the bottom that occurred when the dishwasher door was opened during a cycle were the indication of siphoning. Although the maintenance agreement did not cover such a fix, he explained how we homeowners could get the part and install it--a relatively simple procedure for DIY in the basement. The total cost of the service performed was valued at about $291. The parts would been about $158 of that. As the addition to my home got further behind schedule, I called NFM 4 times to push back the delivery of the appliances. Each time I asked if the delay would be an issue and I was assured that there would be no problem with holding the items until I was ready. On the 5th call I informed NFM that my contractor had walked off the job and that I was in the process of hiring a new contractor to finish the addition. I asked if I could just put a hold on the delivery of the product and that I would call with a delivery date when I was ready for the items. I estimated the time frame to be sometime in January and asked if there would be any problem holding my appliances until then. I said that if need be, I could have the appliances delivered and stored in my garage. Again I was assured that there would be no problem holding my items until I was ready for them.
On January 9, 2015 I called and said that I was ready to have my appliances delivered and asked for a delivery date of Jan. 19th. I was told that NFM had my stove and vent hood but that my dishwasher would not be available for deliver until some time in February. I asked how the appliance that I had paid for in full and was repeatedly told was in stock and would be held for me was no longer in the warehouse. I was told that the item was on a manufacturer's backorder and that because I had not specifically asked for my items to be put on a special hold, the product remained in the main warehouse, available for delivery for any other orders that may come in for the item. Because the item was on mfg backorder the warehouse stock had been sold out and I had to wait until a new shipment arrived before I could take delivery on the dishwasher. I explained that I had spoken to NFM on at least 6 different occasions concerning this order and not one time did anyone tell me that I needed to place a special hold on my items to ensure that they would be in stock when I was ready for them.
The rep that I spoke with said that he would contact the salesman that sold me the appliances to see if there was a comparable item that could be substituted for the backordered item and that he would call me back. This was on Jan. 9th. I waited until 13th for the call back, which I never received. I called NFM again and spoke with another C/S rep, explaining my concerns about my order. She searched for a substitute item but only came up with lower quality products. I did my own search and found the same dishwasher in SS (my order was for a black one) and for the same dishwasher with the door handle and the controls located in a different place on the machine. Both items were more expensive than the one I had ordered. I asked if there was anything they could do about the price. She said that she would check with her supervisor as soon as he got out of a meeting and call me back.
I waited 24 hours but never got the call back. I called her back the next day, got her voicemail and left her a message. She returned my call a few hours later and said that her supervisor would lower the price on SS unit but could not match the price I had paid for the backordered unit. (The supervisor was not willing to work on the price of the other comparable unit because it was temporarily out of stock, although it was due in on Jan. 18th.) I was not willing to pay more money for a dishwasher that was not what I really wanted, so I am stuck waiting for the unit I ordered to come off of backorder.
I am disappointed in NFM for several reasons. First, if I was required to put a special hold on my items to ensure that they would be in stock when I was ready for them, I should have been told this. To mention this for the first time only when it becomes apparent that there is an issue with my order is unacceptable. Second, I felt the customer service I received was lacking. There was no concern shown for the problems this had created for me (I had plumbers/electricians/HVAC personnel scheduled for the following week to install the appliances), no effort was made to help me find a solution to the problem (I had to do the research to try to find a sub item) and not once did NFM call back when they stated they would.
After 6 months of dealing with delays and problems with my addition I will finally have a finished kitchen next week - everything but a dishwasher, which I will have to wait 2 more weeks for. I am not happy with how NFM has handled this issue.

They told us that the installers would contact us in 48 hours. After 3 days we called back only to find out that he gave them the wrong number. So the installers didn't show up until the following week. 6 days without water in the kitchen. After the sink was install the installers had trouble with the plumbing, LEAKS, and didn't check everything out before they left. We had to call Lowes again and get them back out to fix leaks that it turned out they had caused by forcing the wrong type of drain pipe onto my drains. The young man worked on it for two hours, made calls to others whom he said knew more about plumbing than he did. He claimed there were no more leaks when he left. Not true that night we turned the dishwasher on and yep more leaks. Finally called a plumber, that had to cut open the back of our cabinet and repair the Y junction on the drain that was cracked when the people lowes sent forced the wrong P-trap onto it and created a problem that originally did not exist. Metro Mechanical is the name of the contractors that they used. If they try to send those people out, especially for plumbing work, BEWARE.. We complain to Lowes but was told that we should have called back again, so they could send them back. Well no thanks, they had already done enough damage. After the plumbing was fixed correctly my total bill came to almost $800. She was helpful and knowledgeable about the various products. We selected the countertop, sink and faucet, disposal, range hood, gas range and dishwasher that day. We had to go to a different department for the flooring but were given to understand that the work would be coordinated. We paid for and took the smaller items home with us that day (disposal, hood, faucet and gas range). The countertop people were great - they came out as scheduled and did the preparation and later installed the countertop and undermounted sink as well as the backsplach. But, after that, things kind of went downhill. Mind you, everything was already on our HD charge card at this point. First problem was with the plumber who was supposed to hook up the sink and diposal. We also thought he was supposed to install the dishwasher and hook up the range. He was not at all professional and actually complained that HD wasn't paying him enough. He pretty much refused to hook up the range and dishwasher because he wasn't getting paid enough. His work was pretty shoddy on the sink and my husband complained to HD. After much argument, they finally sent their \"Master plumber\" out and she ended up agreeing that it was not done properly. They did make it right but it was a hassle. My husband actually ended up hooking up the range and dishwasher himself. The next problem was with the flooring. We selected a hard bamboo \"floating\" floor. This was not a cheap floor and not like a Pergo type floor. The product was delivered and we had a heck of a time getting the installers to come out . When they did, they said we had a \"high\" spot between the entry hall and the kitchen and they just left! Now, an estimator had already come out to look at the floor prior and he didn't find any problem like that so we were stumped about what to do . As it turned out, we had to find a flooring conttactor to come in and level the floor - another $700. After that, HD sent in a different crew of installers and they did a good job - the head guy even said that they could have fixed the high spot for less cost!! I guess that's easy to say after the work was done. It's been 3 months now and we are over the trauma - only problem we seem to have is the kitchen faucet wobbled and my husband has done some work on it.. I guess this was one of our more complicated projects but I really don't think I would do it the same way if I had it to do over again. To check the status of your appliance warranty and whether you can transfer it when you move, review the terms and conditions of your warranties or consult your home warranty service. When purchasing a new appliance or one from a previous owner, be sure to pay attention to its warranty status, including the type of coverage and any exclusions.
Typically, most appliances last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, depending on the appliance, brand, and amount of use. Keeping a regular maintenance schedule, including cleaning and tune-ups, also helps appliances last longer. Dryers, gas stoves, and refrigerators tend to last the longest, averaging about 13 to 15 years. Microwaves and dishwashers tend to last about 10 years on average.
The average cost to repair an appliance depends on the appliance, make, model, the part that needs repair, and how long it takes to replace or repair a part. The following are the average repair costs for the most common appliances:
Refrigerator: $200–$300
Freezer: $90–$500
Oven, cooktop, range: $100–$500
Microwave: $50–$400
Dishwasher: $160–$300
Garbage disposal: $70–$250
Washing machine: $50–$450
Dryer: $100–$400
Appliance repair contractors may charge $40 to $120 per hour for labor, and most also provide the replacement parts necessary at an additional cost. It’s also important to note that these prices can go up on holidays and emergency fees may apply if you need your appliance fixed immediately.
The cost of home appliances ranges from $350 to $8,000 or more, depending on the brand, type of appliance, and features. Additional cost factors include any hookups that need to be installed, such as gas, plumbing, or electrical. Keep in mind that major appliances, such as refrigerators, washers and dryers, and water heaters, will cost more than minor appliances, such as microwaves, due to the size, complexity, and essential nature of the item.
