"Work took some time to get scheduled but was performed diligently and results were high quality and in-line with estimate and expectations. The deck required a large amount of stripping before resealing which was done successfully. If you have a deck needing rework I recommend Deck Rescue as an option."

"Jay came out to meet with me soon after I submitted my project. He offered up some great options and came back with a great price. Tim and John came out and took great care to demo the old decking and rails quickly. They did a great building the new rails, installed a new privacy wall on the upper deck, and laying down the new decking. I had issues with the stability of stairs and they provided solutions to secure the stairs and prevent any further movement when I walk up and down the steps. They are a hard working, professional, and approachable team."

"Very well. The two workers arrived on time and provided work of high quality. I tried to schedule this service for April and phoned in March. However, spring rain prevented the April work. Because of this the deck furniture and flower pots were in place--the workmen removed these items and one returned, after the paint was dry, to move these items back to the deck. Outstanding service! I have this company back every two years for this deck work; the service and work quality are always outstanding."

"This contractor did a superb job of restoring a deck which had been very poorly stained by another firm several years ago. The original stain had been irregularly applied with many large spots and a generally unsightly appearance. GUP not only cleaned and restained the deck but went the exta distance to sand out the overstained spots left by the original company. The result was a deck which looks perfect and shows no evidence of the earlier mistakes. GUP delivered on time, within the estimate and worked many extra hours to get the job done right. I would recommend them to everyone. They are true professionals."

"Everything looks good. They said their process would be to pressure wash to remove any dirt before painting a day before; did so. They suggested replacement of some rotten wood. They replaced it and painted some cedar siding, soffits and the gutters all the same color. Marcos said that he wouldn't sell the job to another contractor and that he would be there for the job. As far as I could tell, he was not present for the entire job and I had a bit of trouble with one of the painters, but I let Marcos know about it later. If I hadn't been home, I wouldn't have know of any of the problems with the painter, so it was no big deal in the long run. I would hire him again. His quote was a lot less than the other painter's quote. They were able to do the job much sooner than the other painter offered to do it. Marcos was even nice enough to offer some advice on some DIY deck painting we were going to do, and that was awfully nice of him."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Deck boards should be spaced no more than three-eighths of an inch apart. This is enough space to allow water and small debris to pass through without collecting on the surface, but not enough to create a tripping hazard. Certain materials, like pressure-treated wood, shrink over time, so they may need less space at installation.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

The best material for your deck depends on several factors, including your budget, location, aesthetic preferences, and the level of maintenance you’re willing to do. Wood decking, like redwood, ipe, cedar, and pine, lasts the longest, but it’s more expensive and requires more upkeep than composite and synthetic decking.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

Many composite decking manufacturers, including the popular Trex brand, offer warranties that protect against warping under specific conditions. These warranties typically last between 20 and 50 years, but they usually exclude claims related to improper installation of the product. Some manufacturer warranties only cover decks built by certified professionals.
