"Ed is a very friendly and professional. He did an excellent job power washing and staining our deck and gave us a great price. We had quite a few heavy items that needed to be moved off our deck before he could start. My husband and I are not physically able to do this. Ed removed them and when he was finished with the job he put everything back exactly where it was. I would highly recommend Ed to anyone who wants their tired old deck looking new again."

"Work took some time to get scheduled but was performed diligently and results were high quality and in-line with estimate and expectations. The deck required a large amount of stripping before resealing which was done successfully. If you have a deck needing rework I recommend Deck Rescue as an option."

"Very well. The two workers arrived on time and provided work of high quality. I tried to schedule this service for April and phoned in March. However, spring rain prevented the April work. Because of this the deck furniture and flower pots were in place--the workmen removed these items and one returned, after the paint was dry, to move these items back to the deck. Outstanding service! I have this company back every two years for this deck work; the service and work quality are always outstanding."

"This contractor did a superb job of restoring a deck which had been very poorly stained by another firm several years ago. The original stain had been irregularly applied with many large spots and a generally unsightly appearance. GUP not only cleaned and restained the deck but went the exta distance to sand out the overstained spots left by the original company. The result was a deck which looks perfect and shows no evidence of the earlier mistakes. GUP delivered on time, within the estimate and worked many extra hours to get the job done right. I would recommend them to everyone. They are true professionals."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The cost to build a second-story deck averages $4,800, though the actual price could range as low as $420 to upwards of $16,000. While labor costs range between 35% and 50% of the total project cost, the materials and complexity of design will ultimately lead you to save or spend more money on this home addition.

Your deck may pop, and your neighbor’s deck may not for a number of reasons. Whether or not a deck pops will depend on how it was made, the conditions it’s exposed to, and the materials. Improper spacing is a common reason for increased pressure between deck boards. Moisture penetration is another.

Expect to spend around $10,000 to $11,000 to replace a 20-by-20-foot deck. Using high-end materials like composite or exotic hardwoods can drive up the cost, as can custom features and design elements. You can also expect to pay more than average if your deck replacement requires a site evaluation or if you need the work done during the busy season.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

A cedar deck can increase your home's value if the project is executed well. The value added by a deck is influenced by factors such as location, materials, and craftsmanship. In regions with warmer climates, decks are particularly desirable, enhancing outdoor living spaces.

The key to getting the most value out of your investment, both in terms of home value and personal enjoyment, is to make sure your deck is built to exacting standards. You should consult with a professional deck builder to get the best results and the highest ROI.
