"Braxton repaired a major hole in our 100 year old textured plaster ceiling. He replaced the damaged area with drywall and textured the patch to match the rest of the ceiling. Even without painting the difference is almost undetectable."

"Braxton was extremely nice and talented. He fixed a large hole in our drywall that was above the cabinets. He also re-textured the ceiling to match the existing texture. After the repair was completed, he cleaned up the dust and mopped the floor."

"Project went great.  Contractor built a high quality scaffold to reach the chimney and performed the work in 2 days.  The 1st day allowed for the primer and the scratch coat to be installed and the second day allowed for the finish coat.  I asked the contractor to price re-painting the chimney, but his price was too high for me.  However he did offer to allow me to utilize his scaffold to paint it myself.  I appreciated this gesture.
I have used other stucco contractors in the past and their work failed several years down the road.  Jim Spears Plastering is the only stucco contractor I will use going forward.  Highly recommend this contractor.

"John and his Grandson, Marcus, were a delight to work with. Very professional. Very detailed. Very meticulous. John knows his craft and insists on quality. You would never know the plaster walls had holes in them from the whole house rewire we had done earlier in the year. John and Marcus went above and beyond to make us happy and even took on additional tasks outside of the original scope of work. You just don’t find craftsman like John nowadays. You get what you pay for."

"Joel Thomas and the people that work with him are professional, polite, and considerate. There is no need to be concerned about the people working with him. He is very helpful in suggesting colors that work well. He let me know when they would arrive, and they were on time. They covered and moved furniture, and worked hard and carefully. They patched imperfections on the walls, and painted the ceiling and walls. They also replaced four light fixtures that I had purchased. They cleaned up after the work was done, moved furniture back, and made sure that I checked to be sure everything was OK. Joel Thomas has painted and done repairs on the outside of my home twice before, and I would always hire him for that kind of work."

"He came out, was late. repaired a hole that had been cut in the ceiling because of a leak. He did a pretty good job on that patch. He tried to fix up a patch that someone else had done a very poor job of installing previously. He made it look much worse than before he started. Some of the plastering on one seam of second patch was put on so heavily with apparently no tape such that the plaster cracked. Having to hire another drywall contractor to fix everything up as I do not want this guy back again.

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can use drywall repair techniques for some types of plaster damage. Tiny holes and small cracks in plaster can be patched in similar ways to drywall. You apply the necessary compound to fill the hole, wait for it to dry, then sand it down. For larger damage, like water damage or mold, you need to use plaster-specific techniques and materials.

Common causes of ceiling cracks along drywall seams include poor drywall installation techniques, structural issues, truss uplift, and foundation problems. Temperature and humidity also play major roles in ceiling cracks flush with the wall. As the drywall shrinks and expands from major temperature changes or extreme humidity shifts, this can cause the drywall to crack.

Although they have similar applications, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Their primary differences lie in their composition, consistency, and ideal use cases.

Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it thicker than joint compound. It dries quickly and is easy to sand, which makes it ideal for small wall repair projects like filling nail holes or patching minor damage.

Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum. It is primarily used for large-scale projects, such as taping and finishing the seams on newly installed drywall. It tends to shrink more than spackle and can be more difficult to spread.

While both products can be used to fill small depressions and cracks, spackle cannot replace joint compound for taping and mudding new drywall. Conversely, you can often use joint compound for small patching jobs typically done with spackle.

Smaller is better when patching holes with spackle. Any holes wider than four to six inches in diameter tend to be too wide to repair with spackle alone. You'll likely want to patch bigger holes with a drywall panel.

Even holes measuring up to 6 inches may be challenging to fill with spackle alone. For best results, purchase a wall repair patch made from wire mesh. Cut the patch to fit over the hole, then use the spackle to hold it in place. Apply the spackle over the patch as you would for a smaller hole.

Drying alone can take 1 to 4 hours to dry to the touch per plaster layer, but some types of plaster take several hours longer to dry. However, this doesn’t mean the job is done because plaster doesn’t fully harden until it cures, which can take a few days to a couple of weeks. It may take even longer if you’re building a new, pretty thick plaster wall. Allow the plaster to cure before painting it.
