"Kevin answered my request for Handyman Services soon after I posted. I had a chirping smoke alarm in my cathedral ceiling and needed someone to take care of it quickly. Kevin worked me into his schedule which I appreciated. Besides installing three new smoke alarms, Kevin installed a new kitchen faucet and a Ring Doorbell. Kevin completed everything quickly and efficiently. He cleaned up everything and took all leftover material with him leaving my house in great condition. Kevin is friendly and professional. I will use his service again and highly recommend him."

"Work went smoothly.  Roofers were cognizant of weather and made sure that they tore off the old shingles only to the extent that they could replace them the same day.  Don Jordan pointed out that when installing the ice and water shield next to dormers, they would need to run the ice and water shield up underneath the existing siding, in order to provide the maximum effectiveness of the product.  So they cut part of the way up the siding and then applied new wood trim in such a way that it looked as though it was originally that way.  A portion of the roof meets the chimney -- they added a "saddle" to divert water away from where the roof meets the base of the chimney, in order to minimize the risk of future leak.

When the project was done, all debris was removed and the ground was swept with a magnet to pick up  nails.

Throughout the project, workers were professional and cordial.

"Gary arrived a few minutes before the scheduled time. He removed the old ceiling fan (38 years old and heavy) with no problems.  The old fan box was not suitable for the new fan so he installed the correct box. We were unsure how we wanted to operate the fan/lights so he explained in detail the different options we had. This was very helpful and so we chose the remote.  Gary went online and showed us exactly what kind of remote we needed. My husband went to Home Depot and purchased the remote. Not long after that Gary had the fan up and running. He also gave us good info on the different types of bulbs we could use for the lighting. He did an excellent job for us and was very nice and professional too.   We will be getting a new fan in our family room soon and we will have Gary do the install.

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

The direction your ceiling fan spins helps create comfortable airflow in your home and can also help cut down on energy costs.

During summer, your ceiling fan should spin counterclockwise. This will push cooler air downward in a column and help lower your room’s air temperature. In the winter, set your ceiling fan to spin clockwise and at the lowest speed setting. This will pull cool air upwards, displacing the warm air that pools towards the top of your ceiling and bringing it down towards the floor.

Yes, you can install a ceiling fan where a standard light fixture is, as the electrical wiring is often similar and may not need to be replaced. The most important step is to ensure the ceiling can support the fan's weight and motion. You will need to replace the existing light fixture's electrical box with a fan-rated electrical box, which is specifically designed to handle the extra weight and vibration. These boxes will be labeled as suitable for ceiling fan support and will indicate the maximum weight they can hold. Before you begin, also consider if you need an extension rod for a high ceiling or a special mount for an angled ceiling.

Hiring an electrician to install a new ceiling fan may be the best course of action. Installing a ceiling fan requires basic electrical and mechanical knowledge. It also requires holding it up with one hand and in an awkward position, making the installation even more difficult. If you’re uncomfortable with these circumstances, your best bet is to hire a professional.

There are many types of ceiling fans available, each designed for different spaces and needs. Standard ceiling fans are the most common type and work well in most rooms. Low-profile ceiling fans are better suited for rooms with low ceilings. Smart ceiling fans can be controlled with a smartphone or voice commands. For larger spaces with ceilings between 10 and 25 feet high, large ceiling fans are ideal. Dual-motor fans have two motors to produce more airflow in multiple directions. You can also find energy-efficient or Energy-Star models that can be up to 60% more efficient, as well as fans with built-in lights or retractable blades.

If you’re replacing an old fixture with a ceiling fan, you usually won’t need a permit, but if your electrician runs new wiring for the fixture, you likely will need a permit. Building permits are necessary in most municipalities if you’re making changes to your electrical system, so even if you have partial wiring run to the area and need new wiring installed for added functionality, you’ll probably need a permit. Your electrician should be able to let you know if you need one, and they’ll typically file the paperwork for you.
