"Porterhouse Heating and Cooling was very professional and knowledgeable on the service provided. I used them to install my air conditioner unit. Eventhough, the unit was not my issue, they still came out and was able to find the issue and fix it. They were friendly, professional, and reasonably priced. I will definitely use again for any of my HVAC concerns."

"Vinny came over to my home the same day to give an estimate as I needed to replace my exisiting humidifier. I already knew it wasn’t working and super old so best to replace it. He explained everything to me when looking at my furnace room. Explained the different size and efficiency of the various models I could use with the size of my home. Quick to schedule installation as well :) I will definitely use this company for future HVAC needs!"

"Steve and his team are very professional and get the job done in a timely fashion. We had three quotes on a new HVAC system and his was by far the lowest. They were wonderful to deal with and would hire them again without question."

"This is our second year in our home and we realized last winter that our backroom addition had little-to-no heat flow and was frigid cold. Our goal was to make that room usable year-round. We bid with two other HVAC contractors and we pulled the trigger with Jim and his team. What put them apart was that they took their time assessing our home and situation, walked through all possible options, and clearly communicated those options. They evaluated and wanted to find the most feasible option for us, with efficiency and cost in mind. The other contractors came through and kind of already had their minds set on what heating system to use. Jim is also very personable, knowledgeable, and easy to communicate with. Jim and Carlton's proposal was the most cost effective overall - the unit/system itself and our personal ROI. It was gas as opposed to electric, the job was the least complex in terms of labor and construction, and it's functionality was worth the price."

"This contractor did not try any of the many HVAC scams that are rampant in this industry. I called several other places and what they "claimed" they needed to do vs. what was really needed was laughable and insane. All wanted to install a complete new system at a greatly infated price instead of fixing a minor problem in a newish system."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

You may never need an AC recharge if there are no leaks. However, if your AC unit has a leak that cannot be patched appropriately, you’ll need an AC recharge every time the freon level drops low enough that it disrupts your system—this could be once every two to three years. It all depends on the size and frequency of the leak.

If you don't clean your AC evaporator coils, dirt and debris will build up, which impairs the system's ability to transfer heat. This forces the unit to work harder, leading to inefficient performance, higher energy bills, and frequent breakdowns. Over time, neglected coils can corrode, which may cause refrigerant leaks, or develop mold, ice buildup, and a clogged condensate drain, resulting in poor air quality and an uncomfortable home.

ACs don't run on water. They're not connected to drain pipes or any part of your plumbing system. However, they need refrigerant to run. Refrigerant is a gas or liquid that has a low boiling point and absorbs the heat in your home. ACs need this in order to be functional and cool your home. If you suspect your AC is low on refrigerant, you need to contact a licensed HVAC professional. Refrigerant is a dangerous chemical that requires specialized training and permits to work with.

No, you don’t need a ductless unit in every room. Ductless AC units don't work the way that window units do, where the air doesn't travel outside that room. The indoor air handlers all attach to the outdoor condenser. While the air doesn't travel the way that traditional ductwork would, the ductless AC units create zones so that one part of the home can be cooler than another. They can spread effectively enough that indoor units only need to be placed in main living areas.

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.
