"A big shout-out to Shawn and his team. He was very knowledgeable, addressed all of our concerns, and made us feel comfortable. We had a full furnace and AC replacement and not only did he make a great offer, but they were on-time, fast and professional. Job well done! I would recommend Porterhouse cooling to everybody who is thinking about some HVAC work."

"Fixed my poor ventilation of my dryer duct. Don't know how effective the hvac duct cleaning was. I figured it didn't hurt to do it once since it's never been done but mostly purchased deal for dryer duct."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances.

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

The cost of R32 refrigerant is about the same as the cost of R410A refrigerant, the most widely available type of refrigerant today. However, R32 systems use about 20% less refrigerant than R410A systems, making the refrigerant less expensive overall.

When your HVAC system is loud, a few different causes are possible. If you have loose connections or bolts in the hardware, they can rattle as the system runs and vibrates. If you have an extremely dirty furnace filter, it could cause the system to generate noise. More commonly, an excessively loud HVAC system indicates a malfunction in the system. You may have a blower motor that is close to failing or a compressor that is breaking down. These issues require an immediate inspection.

It all depends on the unit’s SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio). A higher SEER rating means better efficiency and lower costs for your energy bills.

Take a look at the product you’re considering purchasing and compare it to other models to decide which one is affordable upfront but will keep your energy costs low over time.

Window AC units use a fair amount of electricity, but significantly less than central AC systems. Because they are more energy-efficient for cooling individual rooms or small spaces, their usage is comparatively low. On average, a window AC unit consumes between 500 and 1,400 watts, while a central AC system uses over 3,500 watts—meaning a window unit uses about one-third of the energy. This typically translates to a monthly running cost of $15 to $40, although this can vary depending on external factors.
