"This spring I decided to repaint the walls inside my entire house and my garage. Quality Painting was the first place I called for a bid. I had used Quality Painting a few years ago to paint my ceilings and they did an outstanding job. Sure enough, his bid was very affordable and I knew from my own experience with him he'd do a wonderful job. William Stephens is honest and trustworthy, he shows up when he says he will, works efficiently and quickly, and cleans everything up when he's done. And most importantly, his work is beautiful! You will NOT be disappointed if you hire William Stephens with Quality Painting for your painting projects. I enthusiastically recommend him to anyone!"

"Did a good job installing a new frame and back door. They took the existing screen door and installed it. No more gap at the bottom and air tight! the only problem I had, is after they left, I found damage to the new door around the hardware bolt exits were pieces of the door had been broken off. That's why quality is at a 4 star. Other than that, they were cheaper than other quotes and very friendly/professional. I plan to use them again for other projects."

"Clean Cut Painting and Handyman in Decatur completed several projects for us and I could not be more pleased. They refinished our deck, replaced a bathroom exhaust fan and living room ceiling fan. They also patched drywall and painted the walls and ceiling in our garage. The quality of work was excellent and the work was completed in a timely manner for all of these jobs. I highly recommend Clean Cut in Decatur for almost any home improvement or repair job you may need."

Small jobs welcome

"David gave us a very competitive proposal and outlined benefits of various paint types. He arrived promptly each day and completed the job on timea as agreed. As he is hearing impaired, most of our communication was by notes but after the initial confusion, this was not a problem. His telephone is served by a translating service."

Painting questions, answered by experts

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.

Yes, staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan, typically by five to 10 years. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it can still fall victim to moisture, sun exposure, and rot over time. Applying a treatment creates a protective shield that helps prevent splintering, fading, and decay, preserving the wood's strength and appearance. A combination stain and sealer often provides the best protection, as it soaks into the wood grain rather than just sitting on top. This offers superior defense against UV damage and rot and lasts longer than a sealer alone. To maintain the wood's natural look, consider using a near-translucent stain. You should plan to reapply the stain or sealer every two to three years.

Adding a second coat of stain to wood can even out the color to some extent, but it won't drastically alter the hue if the initial application is too light or too dark. It's more effective at enhancing the richness of the color rather than significantly changing it. Ensure the first coat is dry before applying the second.

Rags used with oil-based stains are highly flammable and can spontaneously combust in the right conditions. To reduce the fire risk, throw them in a metal container after use and add rocks on top to secure them. Add an inch of water and seal the container. Take the rags in the container to a hazardous waste factory as soon as possible.
