"He was very easy to work with. He saw the vision of what was needed and did it to perfection. He is very fair with his estimate and stayed with price quoted. Ask several times durning job if it was to our satisfaction and he also did a couple of other things that were not on his list but made the place look better. We are so happy with him that we have ask him to come back after the build and finish off the yard with seeding and whatever else is needed. ."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Schedule excavating during late summer or early fall when IL soils are dry, and finish before the mid-November ground freeze. Visible signs like stair-step foundation cracking, bowing basement walls, or persistent standing water indicate immediate drainage issues. Recurring sewer backups also signal failing underground pipes. Time your project alongside municipal street reconstruction to minimize disruption while upgrading your water service lines or replacing damaged clay tile sewer laterals.

Helpful?

Homeowners frequently underestimate the volume of soil disposal required for excavating. Local clay expands significantly when dug up, requiring extensive haul-away plans. Illinois building codes mandate a 42-inch frost depth, meaning footings and utilities require deeper digging than expected. Account for long permit approval timelines and strict stormwater management requirements. Check your lot for utility easements and test the soil bearing capacity before planning any major ground disturbance.

Helpful?

Hire a licensed Springfield contractor with extensive experience handling local expansive clay soils. Confirm the professional follows strict 811 notification practices and adheres to trench safety standards. An experienced pro will coordinate directly with local utilities for service line information and handle all municipal permit requirements. Ask for references from completed projects within the city to ensure the contractor understands local infrastructure and strict regulatory requirements for excavating.

Helpful?

Excavating near your Springfield home impacts multiple systems due to intertwined water and electric corridors. Digging alters the moisture balance in expansive clay soils, which directly affects older basement walls. Request service line records to avoid damaging fragile mid-century sewer pipes or hidden agricultural drainage tiles. Confirm your septic connection status and call 811 to mark natural gas lines, preventing serious safety hazards and unexpected yard flooding.

Helpful?

Before starting any excavating, Illinois law requires calling 811 at least 48 hours in advance to mark underground utility lines. Springfield has dense, intertwined electric and water utilities, making digging risky. Document visible symptoms like settling or pooling water to share with a professional. Review your property survey to understand easement locations. Check municipal stormwater maps for known drainage problems in your neighborhood before disturbing the ground.
