The price depends, however, on the fabric and quality of the runner. A wool stair runner can be more expensive than an inexpensive polyester carpet and vice versa. Keep an eye on your budget, knowing that the higher quality the carpet and the carpet pad, the better the carpet will wear over time.

While bamboo floors are more sustainable and affordable than hardwood, they can dent and warp incredibly easily. Humidity and water damage easily cause warping, buckling, and swelling because bamboo is incredibly absorbent. For this reason, bamboo floors are best used in dry regions. They can also discolor with age like other types of flooring, particularly in high-traffic areas of your home.

Carpet tiles are less expensive than traditional carpet. The average cost of carpet installation is $1,800, or $3 to $11 per square foot. In comparison, carpet tiles cost $2.50 to $11 apiece and can often be bought in bulk cartons. Since you can more easily DIY carpet tiles, you may be able to save on installation costs, too.

You can lay carpet by yourself, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should. DIY carpet installation can save you on labor costs, but you’ll have to pay more to get the right tools and equipment first. A knee kicker, carpet stretcher, and seam roller are a few pieces of equipment you’ll need that you may not already have lying around. And keep in mind that repairing or replacing carpet later because of a bad installation is twice as expensive as paying a pro to handle it in the first place.

Start the first row of vinyl planks along the longest or most visible wall in the room. This will create a clean, straight foundation row to build off of. Snap a chalk line to guide the first row, and use spacers for the most precise installation—these maintain an even extension gap between the flooring planks and the wall. Finally, double-check that the first row is level before moving on to the second row. If it’s not, start over and get it right before completing the rest of the floor.
