"I been having trouble with my AC split level units not responding (they also include heat pumps). The original company that installed these are no longer around. I wanted to find someone that had lasting power and were pros. I saw that Shavitz has been in business for 4 generations! I read the reviews and was impressed. I schedule a service call and the first person who came out here was Brandon. He really went through and check out all the units and the outside controller. He discovered the problem was with a controller board. Brandon checked with the manufacturer if the board was under warranty (it wasn't). The part wasn't ready available and had to be ordered and installed at a later date. Brandon did a very thorough job of making sure the rest of the system was fine. The job was completed by Kevin early the next week. Kevin was also very friendly and pleasant to talk to. I learn a lot about the system. He was able to get the units up and running very quickly and throughly check everything was in good working order. I'm very happy with the service and responsiveness with the company. They answered all of my questions and I felt very comfortable with them. I do plan to hire them again for all future maintenance of my AC and boiler."

"We purchased a new central air conditioner and a 2-stage furnace. In addition, they needed to update the air circulation to and from the system, which was nicely done. Needed a little tweaking, and one of the owners came out to perform the simple task himself."

"They were able to send out a tech to repair our AC pretty quickly (within a few days), even though this was during a bout of unusually high temperatures. The tech arrived towards the end of the given arrival window; even though he was still within the window, they called me that day to let me know he would be later rather than earlier, which was nice. The tech diagnosed the issue, and discussed options with me and fixed it (low line refrigerant, possible leak). All that was great, and prices seemed reasonable. The only negative part of the experience is that there was an extra charge to de-ice the frozen interior coils. I could have done that in advance if I knew I was supposed to (the tech seemed surprised I hadn't, or that I wasn't told to). Maybe that's obvious to others, but it's not that big of a deal, just an an annoying extra cost."

"We were very happy with American Family. Their bid was competitive and the installation of our new air conditioner went very smoothly. They removed the existing system and were great about not destroying our landscape. We had them install the new system in a new location, away from the back patio. So far everything seems to be running fine and I would happily recommend them to anyone."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, but they don’t feel the same as an AC-cooled room. You’ll feel cool, moist air, opposite from an HVAC system that dries the air as it cools. Ventless units also have less tonnage than alternatives like ductless and central air, which means they aren’t as capable of quickly cooling large spaces or circulating cold air.

The general rule of thumb for figuring out how much AC tonnage you need in your home is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of space you need to cool, you’ll need one ton of AC cooling power. So, a 1,000-square-foot home will need 2 tons of AC power.

While many states do not have specific licensing requirements for HVAC companies, your local city or county might. It's always a good idea to check local requirements online and use a tool like Angi’s contractor license lookup to confirm that the company you’re considering is licensed. Regardless of licensing, you should always ensure the company you hire is fully insured to avoid potential lawsuits if a technician is injured on your property. Additionally, it is recommended to check if the company holds third-party certifications, such as North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification or R-410A certification, which qualifies them to work with HVAC refrigerants.

Some of the signs of HVAC issues include rising energy bills, rooms not cooling or heating properly, loud noises when in operation, and signs of condensation. To illustrate, if you’re wondering how to stop condensation on air vents, you’ll need to have your HVAC inspected.

You should use a breathable, weather-resistant cover with ventilation. It can be a top cover or a full cover that has mesh to allow airflow. A full, non-breathable cover can cause moisture to build up, leading to rust, frozen parts, and corrosion. A full cover also attracts unwanted critters, such as mice, that can damage the wiring and your unit. If you need to protect your AC unit from falling icicles, choose a sturdy top cover or piece of wood that prevents icicles from damaging your unit.
