"SafeStreets’ alarm system is fantastic. The motion sensors, door/window contacts, and cameras work flawlessly. The home automation features are a huge plus—I can control everything from my phone. Highly recommend SafeStreets to anyone looking for reliable security."

"Last weekend had someone pry our side door open to our exterior garage and the ADT door sensor picked it up immediately. The alarm siren was loud and scared the person off. Someone from the response center called within 30 seconds. We’re fortunate that the security system did what it is supposed to. Feels like we made the right call going with an ADT security system."

Small jobs welcome

"I chose not to hire them because the quote was much, much more expensive than I ever imagined it would be and the estimate did not provide any details to be able to justify or explain the costs. They always answered my questions, but I just never received written documentation of what I would be paying for other than a 1 or 2 line statement. Ex:) I only need one piece of flashing replaced, and they quoted me for all 4 pieces surrounding the door. Those other 3 pieces aren't' damaged, so I just wanted to know why they felt all 4 pieces needed replaced-but I'm not going to waste my time chasing that info. It should have been provided in the 1st estimate since it was additional work. They also added a cost for a sliding bath seat that my grandmother said she never even asked for, and after I reviewed the specs I realized it's free standing and doesn't need to be installed. But, again, there was no detail provided to help me understand why this additional work was added to the estimate.

"Install was easy. Up front cost was pretty low with Angie's List coupon. Monthly price is a little high compared to competing companies. Response time with alarms is excellent. I was advised to use glass break alarms within 10 ft of my first floor windows, which we installed correctly. I asked prior to installation if having one in the kitchen would cause false alarms due to dishes clanging, etc. I was told the glass break alarms are configured to a precise frequency that alarms with breaking glass. So, not a "no", but not really an answer. Well, every time we cook dinner, wash dishes or empty the dish washer, the kitchen glass break alarm gives a warning which would sound the alarm if it was set. This has caused us a number of false alarms while we've been away due to shifting bowls or plates in our drying rack. For the first several we've had to pay our police department $120 to check the house, and I was only notified after the first alarm that there was a cheaper option for a security company to drive by to check for a break in."

"It's all very user friendly and reliable. Jeremy helped get us setup with our new system - he was great, very informative and candid. Larry came out and installed everything, and he was a pleasure. I totally recommend 1st Security USA to anyone in the Washington DC metro area."

"The job went very smoothly. The tech ran a bit late, but he called to say so. He installed a keypad by the front door and assessed the house for security. He suggested, since there are several casement windows in the living room and adjoining dining room that a breaking glass sensor would work better and be more cost-effective than alarming all the windows. He did alarm a door that the previous company (inherited when we bought the house twenty-three years ago) had not considered significant. I feel safer with the current sensor choices than the ones I had before.
He took the time to make sure I knew how to use the system, so I am very pleased with the service. My one caveat: I was told that the motion sensor would not register my smaller pets (two cats) because they weigh under forty pounds. They must have set off the sensor, though, because the police responded. The system certainly alerts the authorities, but that motion sensor is very sensitive!

"We like their service. We haven't had any problems. They are very good. This was the first time we've had an alarm/security system in our home. The supplier is ADT. I like that I can set my alarm every night before I go to bed."

"The experience was wonderful and I would call them again in the future.  I contacted the company and they responded the same day we set up an appointment at the showroom and went over products and design.  They came out to my house and took pictures and exact measurements.  I like that they are securing the permits for the deck since it looks very complicated to acquire.  T

"Yvette Pringle provided courteous and professional feedback to me when I called to inquire about a new home security system.  My situation was unique because we were trying to find something that would work for a deaf person.  I appreciated that Yvette did her research to find out what would work.  She also offered different options in terms of a package and plan.  We did end up going with another company, but I really did want to recognize Yvette for her work.  She was very polite and helpful.

Security Doors questions, answered by experts

A potential weak link in any security system is poor connection strength or dropped signals, particularly in the case of a fully wireless system. You also want to ensure a reliable connection to get a hold of your service provider quickly. Also, you should exercise caution when handing out sign-in credentials to people outside the household.

Security camera prices vary widely, with individual cameras typically ranging from $125 to $450 on average, not including professional installation costs. The camera's quality also impacts what you pay. Expect to pay more for desirable features, including a resolution of 1080p or higher, a field of view over 110 degrees, and enhanced night vision. Remember, your out-of-pocket installation cost will increase significantly when purchasing a complete system to cover your property inside and out.

In general, daytime visibility for security cameras ranges from 10 to 70 feet. Higher-end cameras may have night vision that records 100 to 200 feet out. When shopping for any type of security camera, it's important to pay attention to focal length, resolution, and infrared technology to get an idea of the depth and crispness that will be used when capturing images.

Leaving a light on at night probably does not deter burglars as much as we would like. While there isn’t much evidence supporting the theory that lights deter burglars, there’s not anything disproving it either. If you feel like it offers added security because a burglar thinks you’re at home, then you can set your lights to a timer so they go off and on at intervals, mimicking someone moving around inside the house at night. A better idea is to install motion sensor lights in your yard.

Changing the alarm in your wireless security system is a perfectly reasonable DIY task that most people can complete on their own. Simply open the system’s control panel, remove the existing battery, and replace it with a new one. If you’re using a wired system, this may require disconnecting and reconnecting both the positive and negative wires attached to the battery, and you may want to call in a professional to help.
