"Kenneth was very professional. He showed up on time and was very focused on the job at hand. He assembled a desk, an office chair and a recliner for me. He was very respectful and cleaned up after the projects. Kenneth took the old furniture outside and to the curb. He got rid of all the garbage and broke down the boxes. I would gladly hire Kenneth for any future projects and would highly recommend him to anyone needing a handyman."

Customers say: True professional

"Clint started off strong as a handyman. His workmanship was excellent, his rates were fair, and he was pleasant to work with. Unfortunately, there began to be recurring issues with schedule management and timely communication, which negatively impacted my projects. A miscommunication ultimately led to offense being taken, and he abruptly discontinued work via text without notice to my surprise. Disappointed though I am, I?m thankful for the work he was able to do and wish him all the best as I start the process again to secure another handyman for my remaining items and to have on hand for regular maintenance in the long term."

Reviewing your contract for termination terms is best when ending a relationship with a contractor. If there is nothing in the contract or you had a verbal agreement, communicate your decision in writing, citing specific reasons. Afterward, pay for the completed work per your original agreement. Remember you want a record of all correspondence in case you need a lawyer later to settle disputes.

Whether a scullery is worth it depends on how much you like to cook and entertain. If you frequently host gatherings—a scullery is likely worth the money. If you’re looking for ROI, it’s not so clear. It may not add significant value to your home, as it doesn’t increase square footage and may repurpose space that a buyer would have preferred to remain as-is (like a laundry room).

You can tackle hanging Christmas lights yourself with the right tools, accessories, and a trusted friend or neighbor. You’ll need to purchase a ladder ($100 to $300), clips ($10 to $20), hooks ($10 to $15), and lights ($25 to $100 per string).

Otherwise, you should hire a trusted holiday light installer near you. You’ll pay an average price of $200 to $650, but you’ll have peace of mind knowing that the job is done correctly and safely.

While a handyperson will do the odd small job for your home, a maintenance person is responsible for conducting regular inspections and repairs. Maintenance people may come in to do small fixes and diagnose any issues you might be facing, but may not have all the same technical abilities as a handyperson.

In most states, handypeople do not need to be licensed to perform simple home repair tasks and smaller jobs. When projects exceed specific cost amounts, however, ranging from $500 in California to $50,000 in other states, some municipalities consider them to be contractors, meaning they need to be licensed. To learn if your handyperson should be licensed to work on your job, contact your local governing body or state contractors’ licensing board before starting any work.
