"I scheduled a 2-4 pm appointment earlier this week for Kirkwood Plumbing to come out and fix a toilet. I called to verify this appointment earlier today and was informed they "should be able to come" for the service. At 355 today, I received a call that a plumber could not make it that they could "try again Monday after 3." I informed her that I had to take off work for this appointment and this very inconvenient. Although we've had a good experience with them in the past, this experience is very annoying. Is this normal for plumbing companies to not make 'appointments.'? Update: a plumber came on Monday afternoon and promptly and professionally fixed the problem.

"Very nice very knowledgeable very reasonably priced. They came the same day I called. They moved my initial appointment forward four days because they felt my drain problem (standing water in my kitchen sink)was an emergency situation. I have only great things to say and will not hesitate to call them should I ever have another plumbing issue."

While you don’t have to run out and immediately buy a new toilet at the first sign of a clog, if the toilet keeps clogging because it’s a low-flow or poorly designed model, a new toilet may be the way to go. If your toilet keeps clogging, you can try using less toilet paper, adjusting the fill valve, checking the toilet vent pipe on the roof, and using a toilet auger to make sure nothing is stuck in the pipe or trap.

You generally cannot replace a 10-inch rough-in toilet with a 12-inch model without making significant plumbing updates. A 12-inch rough-in toilet will not fit a 10-inch rough-in space because the floor drain is in the wrong position. To accommodate the larger toilet, you would need to move the drainpipe, which could cost between $0.75 and $30 per linear foot, plus labor. In most cases, it is more cost-effective and simpler to purchase a new 10-inch rough-in toilet. However, it is possible to install a 10-inch rough-in toilet in a 12-inch space by using a longer connector.

Toilet handles can get stuck for a couple of reasons, but it’s commonly an issue with the chain. Remove the lid and check the chain’s connection, running from the flapper to the handle arm. Sometimes the chain gets snagged on or against another part of the tank. 

The chain might not have the right tension. For example, a chain that’s too short can make the handle feel stuck. Check that there’s some slack in the chain. Old, worn-out flappers can get stuck, too. In this case, you’ll need to see which size toilet flapper you need.

There are a few ways to unclog a toilet without a plunger. Break up the clog with homemade solutions containing soap, vinegar, and baking soda, or simply let hot water spend some time in the drain. You can also use a two-liter soda bottle filled with water to push pressurized water into the pipe to dislodge the debris (see the steps above).
