Yes, you can salvage grill grates with some surface rust. Simply apply a commercial rust remover or a homemade vinegar, baking soda, or lemon juice paste with a wire brush or steel wool. After removing the rust from the metal, you can then apply a thin layer of rust-preventing oil to keep the grates looking good as new for longer.
